Assistant Professor of Colorectal Surgery

Augusta University’s Medical College of Georgia, Department of Surgery is seeking a full-time faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor to serve as a Colorectal Surgeon. The position supports the development and growth of a comprehensive colorectal surgery program at Wellstar MCG Health’s main campus and Columbia County Medical Center.

About the role

The faculty member will provide clinical care for patients with colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign colorectal conditions while contributing to resident education, multidisciplinary collaboration, research, community outreach, and the continued development of the division. This position is not on a tenure track.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive surgical care for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign colorectal conditions.
• Develop and maintain an annual clinical volume of approximately:
  • 150 inpatient surgical cases
  • 300 outpatient procedures, including endoscopy
  • 500 new patient visits
• Participate in approximately two operating room days, one full clinic day, and one-half day of endoscopy each week.
• Participate in the division's robotic surgery schedule and help advance minimally invasive and robotic colorectal surgery.
• Provide colorectal surgery call coverage, with a target frequency of no more than one week per month.
• Participate in multidisciplinary colorectal cancer clinics and conferences, including the management of locally advanced, metastatic, and early-onset colorectal cancer.
• Support the development of additional multidisciplinary programs for inflammatory bowel disease, pelvic floor disorders, and other benign colorectal conditions.
• Build relationships with community gastroenterology and oncology practices to support referrals and coordinated patient care.
• Teach and supervise medical students and surgical residents across clinical sites.
• Participate in resident conferences, case reviews, morbidity and mortality discussions, journal clubs, simulation activities, and instruction in endoscopy and robotic surgery.
• Collaborate with Surgical Oncology, the Georgia Cancer Center, and other institutional partners on clinical outcomes, quality improvement, translational, and early-onset colorectal cancer research.
• Participate in established research meetings and forums and contribute to presentations, publications, and future development of an independent colorectal research program.
• Support community service and outreach activities related to colorectal cancer awareness, prevention, and access to care.
• Contribute to divisional program development, including referral pathways, educational programming, website content, quality initiatives, and long-term strategic growth.

Requirements

• MD, DO or equivalent from an accredited institution.
• Eligible to obtain a Georgia Medical License.
• Board certified or board eligible in surgery.
• Early-level career as a faculty member with appropriate post-graduate training.
• Evidence of ability as a teacher and activity as a scholar.
• Successful experience (waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements).

Preferred Qualifications

• Surgical Oncology/Colorectal fellowship training.
• Teaching experience at an academic medical center.

Pay

Salary is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements, subject to availability of funds. Rank and salary are determined at the time of hire based on experience, education, credentials, specialty, training, and internal equity and market data.

Schedule

This is a full-time, fiscal year-based position with a 1.0 FTE (full-time equivalent) work commitment.
