About the Role

Coordinates patient care, personnel management, maintenance of equipment, equipment purchases, and statistical accumulation in the Emergency Department at Barnes-Jewish Hospital—a Level I Trauma facility and leader in disaster preparedness for the St. Louis region. This dynamic, urban setting serves a diverse community with a wide array of medical needs, specializing in rapid assessment and treatment of acute illness and trauma.

Responsibilities

  • Manages individual(s), including hiring, training, assigning work, evaluating performance, and conducting professional development plans.
  • Ensures team productivity and actions align with the department’s operational goals as established by leadership.
  • Participates in developing departmental staffing, revenue, and/or expense budgets; adheres to budget goals and responds to business changes affecting them.
  • Provides and oversees patient care according to planned interventions, considering age and developmental needs to attain optimal wellness, and documents per policy.
  • Creates and ensures implementation of a collaborative plan of care based on assessment, diagnosis, and medical treatment.
  • Reviews staff hours worked vs. scheduled hours; determines appropriate disposition for variations.
  • Performs and approves daily payroll updates; reconciles time cards, bonus tracking, and coding approval.
  • Prepares, coordinates, and executes staff communications; prepares huddle agendas and leads meetings.
  • Determines staffing needs, makes nursing assignments, assigns overtime, and recommends effective annual increases.
  • Interviews staff for open positions; evaluates and conducts performance reviews; drafts and issues corrective actions/coaching; follows up on disciplinary actions.
  • Ensures staff productivity and adherence to the department’s operational goals.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and recommends areas for improvement.

This is a safety-sensitive position requiring constant alertness and safe work practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
  • 2–5 years of nursing experience (5–10 years preferred).
  • RN licensure.
  • No prior supervisor experience required, though preferred.
