About the role

The Assistant House Manager ensures the safety and comfort of patrons during performances and public occupancy. You will supervise usher staff, coordinate front-of-house activities, enforce theater and college policies, manage crowd control, and serve as the primary point of contact for patrons.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive before usher call time and open the theater one hour before showtime.
  • Remain on radio at all times during events.
  • Designate and check in ushers for key positions in the theater.
  • Supervise ushers in preparing the theater for events.
  • Meet with Stage Manager, Box Office Manager, Security Supervisor, and ushers to discuss event-specific details.
  • Collaborate with the management team to ensure standards are met.
  • Check in and brief back-door security as needed.
  • Act as liaison to police detail and/or Berklee security for the event.
  • Coordinate with Stage Manager/Production and security to open the house.
  • Manage handicapped seating requirements with Box Office and ushers.
  • Monitor usher staff during events and provide breaks as appropriate.
  • Enforce theater policies on photography, food & beverages, smoking, etc.
  • Troubleshoot problems or audience complaints.
  • Manage emergency situations (e.g., medical emergencies or evacuations) and coordinate with appropriate parties.
  • Document incidents, emergencies, or maintenance issues via reports or work orders.
  • For pro shows, settle with merchandise representatives and complete house reports.
  • Supervise ushers in closing the theater and secure the building after events.
  • Evaluate existing policies and procedures, recommending improvements and staff training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 1+ year of supervisory/management experience.
  • Problem-solving and leadership skills.
  • Event security or crowd control experience and training.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with the public, staff, promoters, and touring personnel.
  • 3+ years of customer service experience, with tact and diplomacy.
  • Knowledge of health, safety, and fire regulations.
  • Ability to climb stairs and lift up to 50 lbs.
