Assistant Head Men's & Women's Cross Country/Track & Field Coach

About the role

The Alfred University Assistant Head Cross Country & Track & Field Coach is responsible for assisting the head coach with the organization and management of the NCAA Division (Ill) men's and women's cross country, indoor, and outdoor track and field programs. This includes teaching and coaching student-athletes for successful competition; mentoring and engaging student-athletes' for athletic, academic, and personal success; meeting recruiting goals; civic engagement; planning and managing budgets and schedules; fundraising; and developing positive alumni and parent relations.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an exemplary standard of conduct, which reflects the highest level of professionalism and good judgment
• Provide a teaching and learning environment that is nurturing, intellectual and supportive of individual differences
• Aid in the development of strategies and techniques for all phases of the sport to best prepare the team and individuals for competition
• Aid in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of practice and competition plans that are effective for the sport and congruent with team/individual ability
• Aid in the development and implementation of a team philosophy that is supportive of the educational mission of the university and the athletic department
• Direct student athletes, part time assistant coaches, and support staff to conduct themselves in such ways that bring credit to the team and Alfred University
• Under the direction of the head coach implement a recruiting plan consistent with Alfred University's mission
• Cultivate a recruiting network
• Aid in maintaining the department's recruiting contact management system
• Recruit student-athletes that coincide with the academic profile of Alfred University students
• Maintain open communication with other Alfred University coaches regarding shared prospects
• Be knowledgeable about admissions and financial aid processes
• Aid the head coach in meeting recruiting goals
• Aid in maintaining active membership in professional sport organizations
• Pursue formal and informal educational opportunities
• Participate in department professional development seminars
• Promote sport in area communities
• Establish and maintain a positive relationship with interested segments of the community (e.g. youth groups, civic organizations, media)
• Comply with institutional and departmental policies
• Be knowledgeable of and comply with all NCAA and Empire 8 rules and regulations
• Supervise part time assistant coaching staff
• Work collaboratively with department staff
• Manage equipment, uniforms, and facilities
• Work collaboratively with advancement staff to plan and implement sport fundraising activities
• Maintain professional coach-athlete relationships
• Develop a positive relationship with alumni and parents of current and prospective student-athletes
• Serve on a departmental operational team (10%)

Requirements

• Formal Education: Bachelor's degree is required; master's degree is preferred with preference in education, health science, sport management, or related field
• Experience: A minimum of four years as a collegiate cross country and track & field student-athlete and/or coach is required. A minimum of two years of collegiate track and field coaching is required. Demonstrated successful recruiting and retention of cross-country and track and field student-athletes, preferably at NCAA Division (Ill), is required
• Additional Knowledge/Skills: Proven organizational skills as well as a recognizable commitment to student growth and academic achievement. An overall knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations is required. Certification as a strength and conditioning professional is an asset (e.g., NSCA-CSCS)

• An overall knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
• Certification as a strength and conditioning professional is an asset (e.g., NSCA-CSCS)

• A safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment
• Competence with technology resources and a current U.S. driver's license are vital to fulfilling the responsibilities of this position
• First Aid, AED, and CPR certification is required by the start date
