Assistant Engineer (Civil/Construction) - VID 221964
Responsibilities
- Supervise and inspect building construction projects of moderate size and complexity.
- Coordinate the operations of contractors and ensure conformity of work to contract estimates, specifications, standards, and construction practices.
- Assist higher-level staff on larger projects.
- Recommend and prepare contract change orders.
- May supervise consultant work.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Travel may be required (approximately 20%). Possession and maintenance of a valid Driver’s License issued by the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles is required or otherwise demonstrate the capacity to meet the transportation needs of the job.
Requirements
- Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE).
- A qualifying bachelor's degree or higher in one of the following fields:

- Civil Engineering

- Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above-listed engineering degrees
- OR one year of full-time qualifying engineering experience related to construction project supervision of the structural and architectural elements of buildings.
- OR current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to a Grade 18 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

Additional Information
There is no examination required for appointment to this position. Candidates hired will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period. Within one year of permanent appointment, non-competitive employment status is expected to convert to competitive status without requiring an exam, affording the same rights and privileges as competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in this role, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.
Pay
Salary adjustments for positions at the Assistant level (not trainee) include a $7,000 geographic pay differential added to the hiring salary in Buffalo.
