About the Role
This position involves engineering design, redesign, or review of plumbing, piping, fire protection systems, and heating and ventilating systems for new and rehabilitation construction projects. It may also include addressing complex mechanical system challenges in existing facilities to ensure compatibility with building structures. The role includes preparing mechanical specifications, estimates, and energy conservation studies, as well as supervising consultant work and performing supervisory duties.
Travel may be required (approximately 20%). Possession and maintenance of a valid New York State Driver’s License or the ability to meet transportation needs is required.
Responsibilities
- Perform engineering design and redesign or review of mechanical systems, including plumbing, piping, fire protection, heating, and ventilating systems for new and rehabilitation projects.
- Address complex mechanical system challenges in existing facilities to ensure compatibility with building structures.
- Prepare mechanical specifications, estimates, and energy conservation studies for mechanical design projects.
- Supervise consultant work and perform a full range of supervisory duties.
- Perform other assigned duties.
Requirements
Applicants must meet one of the following minimum qualifications:
- Proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and a qualifying bachelor's degree or higher in one of the following fields:
- Aerospace Engineering
- Architectural Engineering
- Architectural Engineering Technology
- Building Engineering
- Construction Engineering
- Construction Engineering Technology
- Construction Engineering Management
- Construction Engineering Management Technology
- Fire Protection Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering Technology
- Nuclear Engineering
- Nuclear Engineering Technology
- Engineering Science with a recognized concentration in any of the above-listed engineering degrees
- Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and one year of full-time qualifying mechanical engineering experience.
- Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to Grade 18 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law.

Pay
Salary adjustments for positions at the Assistant level (not trainee) in Buffalo include a $7,000 geographic pay differential added to the hiring salary.
Additional Information
This position is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). Candidates hired via NY HELPS will be appointed on a permanent non-competitive basis and will begin a probationary period. Within one year of permanent appointment, non-competitive employment status is expected to convert to competitive status without requiring an exam, granting the same rights and privileges as other competitive class employees. While serving in a NY HELPS title, employees may participate in any promotion examination for which they qualify.
