ASSISTANT EMS COORDINATOR

Alamo Navajo School Board, Inc. – 12-month full-time, non-exempt position funded through an IHS contract.

Qualifications

• At least 18 years old, high-school graduate or GED, physically fit, and of good character.
• Current New Mexico EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate certificate/license.
• Valid New Mexico driver’s license, CPR, and First Aid certification.
• Clear verbal and written communication skills for staff instruction, report writing, and inter-agency coordination.
• Ability to read and apply technical EMS materials and protocols.
• Experience supervising staff, maintaining positive clinic and community relations, and working with referral agencies (e.g., Socorro General Hospital, Indian Health Service).
• Working knowledge of New Mexico EMS Bureau regulations, statewide EMS communications, and EMT licensing requirements.
• Ability to remain composed during emergencies, make field-treatment decisions per established protocols, and exercise sound judgment.
• Familiarity with the Alamo Navajo community, its people, and resources preferred.
• EMT-Paramedic certification desired.
• Fluency in English and Navajo preferred.

Indian preference: Preferential consideration given to documented Navajo, American Indian, or Alaskan Native tribal members who meet the above qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the EMS Coordinator to ensure 24-hour coverage by two on-duty personnel (one at least EMT-B or higher).
• Assist in maintaining EMS logbooks, run reports, and confidential records in compliance with program requirements.
• Support the EMS Coordinator in maintaining emergency vehicles, equipment, radios, and other program resources.
• In the EMS Coordinator’s absence, supervise EMS staff, manage the 24-hour schedule, approve leave and training requests, verify biweekly timesheets, and initiate disciplinary actions in consultation with the Medical Director and Health Services Director; may conduct staff meetings and annual evaluations.
• Assist with orienting and training new EMS personnel, organizing certification training, and inventorying/ordering supplies.
• Perform emergency and non-emergency procedures at the EMT-Basic or Intermediate level while on shift, including:
  • Emergency driving techniques and use of the statewide EMS communications network.
  • All EMT-Basic skills.
  • Peripheral venous puncture, blood draws, and IV fluid therapy (excluding blood or blood products).
  • Use of multi-lumen airways (combitubes and PTLA).
  • Administration of approved medications via intravenous, subcutaneous, or nebulized inhalation.
  • Semi-automatic defibrillation and rhythm documentation of cardiac activity.
  • Monitoring IV solutions containing potassium (≤20 mEq/1000 cc or ≤10 mEq/hour).
  • Administration of allowable EMT-Basic and Intermediate medications, including:
    • 50% dextrose (IV).
    • Naloxone (Narcan) – intravenous and subcutaneous.
    • Epinephrine (1:1000) – subcutaneous for anaphylaxis and severe asthma (≤0.3 cc per dose).
    • Albuterol via inhaled administration.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the EMS Coordinator.

Supervision

Reports to the EMS Coordinator. Supervises First Responders/Trainees and EMTs in the absence of the EMS Coordinator.

Pay

• Grade J on ANSB’s General Salary Scale for EMT-Basic level; Grade K for EMT-Intermediate level.
• On-call compensation: $2.50 per hour plus a $50.00 base phone stipend.

Schedule

• Full-time, 12-month position with a flexible one-hour lunch break.

Special Conditions

• Child-sensitive position requiring fingerprinting and a criminal/character background investigation.
• Authorized to provide fee-for-service or third-party-payment services to non-Indians within or near the Alamo Navajo community, provided it does not interfere with obligations to Alamo Navajo community members and eligible Indian beneficiaries.
• Considered a federal employee under the Board’s Indian Self-Determination Agreement for Federal Tort Claims Act coverage; status remains unchanged unless additional compensation is received from non-Board sources for covered services.
• All Alamo Navajo Health Center documents and patient information are confidential and protected by federal and state privacy laws; unauthorized dissemination, distribution, or duplication is strictly prohibited.
