About the role

The Assistant Editor manages many aspects of the Cornerstone Press editorial department, which is comprised of undergraduate student staff. The assistant editor will schedule and execute editorial training for all new editorial staff, oversee content editing and copyediting of students’ work, correspond with authors, and delegate specific projects to managing editor(s). The assistant editor will also deliver fully edited and author-approved manuscripts to the publisher/director for production and layout, advise the publisher/director on editorial policies, and participate in public events as a representative of the press.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule and execute editorial training for all new editorial staff each semester
  • Oversee content editing and copyediting of students’ work for all press manuscripts
  • Correspond with authors and schedule editorial timelines
  • Delegate specific projects to managing editor(s) to ensure proper training and experience expectations of undergraduate students are met
  • Deliver fully edited and author-approved manuscripts to the publisher/director for production and layout
  • Advise the publisher/director on editorial policies, training of student editorial staff, and recruitment of new undergraduate interns
  • Participate in public events as a representative of the press
  • Meet regularly with press executive staff
  • Research and write informational materials for publication and distribution
  • Conduct literature searches and develop tracking mechanisms to standardize manuscript preparation and submission
  • Assist in editing, revising, and proofreading materials and resolving errors or inconsistencies in style, syntax, grammar, and format
  • Assist in planning, developing, and publishing internal and external publications
  • Edit manuscripts and text and maintain contact with internal and external stakeholders concerning published work

Requirements

  • Experience in editing fiction, poetry, and prose, published media, or related
  • Expertise in word processing software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English, Literature, Rhetoric, or Writing
  • Experience working with Cornerstone Press
  • Experience working with and mentoring students in a variety of capacities
  • Experience working in collaborative environments
  • Experience with zoom or video conferencing technology
  • Working knowledge of Adobe creative suite

Pay

The Assistant Editor is a part-time (10 hours per week), hourly, non-exempt, annual (12-month), university staff position. Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting rate of $24.97 per hour.
