About the role

The Assistant Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment (SOAR) at San José State University (SJSU) oversees student recruitment initiatives and cultivates strategic partnerships to expand and diversify SJSU’s applicant pool. Reporting to the Senior Director of Student Outreach and Recruitment, this role plays a key role in advancing enrollment goals by planning, organizing, and executing comprehensive undergraduate recruitment strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead undergraduate recruitment efforts and outreach strategies
  • Advise prospective students and families on admissions requirements
  • Plan and participate in recruitment events (on-campus and off-campus)
  • Oversee admissions application review and decision processes
  • Supervise and support recruitment staff and student assistants
  • Collaborate with campus partners to support enrollment goals
  • Analyze recruitment data and recommend improvements
  • Ensure compliance with CSU and SJSU policies and deadlines

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field plus upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution where such are job related
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems
  • A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional, personal or career counseling

Preferred Qualifications

  • Over five (5) years of Student Recruitment Experience in the CSU System
  • Experience working with all higher education student populations (Freshman, Transfer, International, Non Resident, non-traditional, student ambassadors, welcome center operations)
  • Experience in targeted yield and recruitment planning
  • Experience in large scale event planning (on and off campus) and execution
