Assistant Coach - Men's Ice Hockey

About the Role

Under the supervision of the Head Coach, this position uses athletics as a tool to educate college students through inter-collegiate competition and related activities. The role serves as a teacher and mentor, helping build student character and teaching life lessons such as work ethic, discipline, resilience, teamwork, goal-setting, and leadership. This position assists in planning, directing, and coaching the men’s inter-collegiate ice hockey program, playing a key leadership role and filling in for the Head Coach when absent.

Responsibilities

• Athlete Team Management
  • Assists Head Coach in developing, coordinating, and planning practices and competition to develop student-athlete skills.
  • Plans assigned portions of practices and game management consistent with the Head Coach’s strategic vision.
  • Analyzes video to scout opponents and develop team strategies.
  • Executes a student-athlete talent recruitment and retention strategy aligned with excellence and inclusion.
  • Leads and communicates with students to generate team enthusiasm and supports a culture of education through athletics.
  • Assists in academic integration with the team.
• Operational Complexity
  • Assists in developing and executing team strategy, logistics, and operational direction within budget.
  • Maintains compliance with University, Ivy League, NCAA, and other regulations.
  • Coordinates with less-experienced coaches and participates in professional development.
  • Assists the Head Coach in problem resolution and communicates effectively with athletics administrators.
• Communication & Influence
  • Assists the Head Coach in building viewership and maintaining positive media interest.
  • Supports public engagement efforts where applicable.
• Essential Functions
  • Instructs and develops student-athletes; assists in strategic decisions during contests.
  • Oversees strength and conditioning of athletes.
  • Assists in developing and implementing recruiting strategies.
  • Handles administrative responsibilities, including recruiting logistics, team travel, and equipment ordering.
  • Assists in donor relationships, fundraising, and running special events.

Working Conditions

• Evening and weekend work required.
• Frequent travel required.
• Work in extreme environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and high noise levels.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift equipment associated with the sport.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant experience.
• At least 5 years of ice hockey coaching and/or playing experience at the collegiate, professional, or Olympic level.
• Substantial mastery of sport-specific knowledge and relevant issues.
• Understanding of the philosophy, principles, and policies of college athletics, including conflict of interest and commitment policies.
• Moderate management and leadership knowledge.
• CPR and First Aid certification required.
• Valid driver's license preferred.

Pay

Compensation range: $110,000 - $159,000 annually.

Schedule

35 hours per week. This is a one-year term position renewable at the discretion of the Head Coach and the Athletics Director, ending on April 30, 2027.
