About the role

Assistant Coaches assist in recruiting, coaching, overseeing practices and games, and any other duties assigned by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director.

Responsibilities

  • Fulfill head coaching duties in the absence of the Head Coach
  • Research and recruit prospective student-athletes
  • Instruct team members on policies, procedures, training rules, fundamentals, proper training methods, strategies, safety precautions, and health measures
  • Oversee compliance with all policies, procedures, and training rules
  • Assume responsibility for the conduct of student-athletes and other involved students at all times
  • Work with the Head Coach to plan, schedule, and develop a season schedule
  • Develop a competitive athletic program within the entire program
  • Drive/transport team members to away events; maintain a valid driver’s license and satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record
  • Conduct and attend regularly scheduled practices and games
  • Record and tabulate game statistics
  • Manage expenditures for meals, lodging, entry fees, and other necessary expenses
  • Assist in fundraising efforts
  • Research and select equipment and supplies for the sport
  • Record, tabulate, and report game and season statistics to Black Hawk College, Region IV, and NJCAA websites
  • Handle public relations with local and national media
  • Attend and participate as decision-maker in all required meetings when the Head Coach is absent
  • Assist in planning Regional or District Tournaments when the Quad City campus is hosting
  • Assist in budget administration of the athletic program
  • Monitor the academic progress of each student-athlete in conjunction with the Head Coach
  • Teach student-athletes time management and balancing of coursework schedules
  • Develop and teach concepts of teamwork, morale, sportsmanship, courtesy, fair play, academic excellence, and adherence to training and conduct rules
  • Plan and conduct award activities
  • Submit an Annual Report to the Director of Athletics including season records, individual statistics, athletic award winners, goals for the next season, and equipment inventory
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Associate degree or two years of college coursework (60 credit hours) preferred
  • Collegiate experience as an athlete preferred
  • Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record

Principal Working Relationships

Works directly with the Head Coach, Director of Athletics, Office Assistant, and Athletic Department Staff; works indirectly with BHC Faculty and Staff.
