Assistant/Associate Professor of Chemistry

About the role

The Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Materials Science at Fayetteville State University seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty position. The primary purpose of the position is to:

• Teach courses during a nine-month academic year based on interest, expertise, and departmental needs, with teaching loads adjusted to accommodate research projects;
• Conduct independent research and support materials research and education efforts at FSU;
• Mentor undergraduate students in supervised research and training;
• Serve on departmental and college-level committees;
• Secure external grant funding to support personal research and departmental, university, and partner research needs;
• Participate in community outreach to support K–12 STEM education and other community, university, and professional service;
• Initiate and help establish new research and partnerships among faculty at FSU and other schools in North Carolina.

Eligible candidates must have a strong interest and willingness to integrate web-based instructional resources into their teaching. The anticipated start date is August 2027.

Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate courses in chemistry and related programs;
• Develop and maintain an active, externally funded research program;
• Supervise undergraduate research projects and mentor students;
• Participate in departmental and college-level governance through committee service;
• Engage in outreach activities that advance K–12 STEM education and community partnerships;
• Collaborate with colleagues to build interdisciplinary research initiatives and partnerships.

Requirements

• Assistant Professor of Chemistry: Earned Ph.D. in Chemistry from an accredited institution;
• Demonstrated ability to teach at the university level and contribute to scholarly, research, and service activities;
• Strong interest and willingness to integrate web-based instructional resources into teaching.

Qualifications

• Associate Professor of Chemistry: Earned Ph.D. in Chemistry from an accredited institution;
• Minimum five years of progressively responsible teaching, research, and/or professional experience in higher education;
• Demonstrated record of effective teaching, scholarly achievement, and service consistent with appointment at the associate professor rank;
• Strong preference given to applicants with Ph.D. in Experimental Physical Chemistry and relevant postdoctoral research experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior teaching and research experience, especially in experimental physical chemistry.
