Assistant/Associate Professor of Chemistry
About the role
The Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Materials Science offers an ACS-certified BS Chemistry degree with concentrations in General Chemistry, Materials Science, Biochemistry, Pre-Health, and Pre-Pharmacy, as well as a BS Materials Science and Manufacturing degree with concentrations in Materials Science and Computational Materials Science. The Department is equipped with state-of-the-art analytical instruments including electron microprobe, scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope, x-ray diffractometer, UV-Vis, Raman, fluorescence, FTIR, NMR, HPLC, HPLC–MS/MS, GC, GC/MS/MS, and CE.
The primary purpose of the position includes:
- Teaching courses during the nine-month academic year based on interest, expertise, and departmental needs, with teaching requirements adjustable to accommodate research projects;
- Conducting independent research and supporting materials research and education efforts at Fayetteville State University;
- Mentoring undergraduate students in supervised research and training;
- Serving on departmental and college-level committees;
- Securing external grant funding to support individual research and broader departmental, university, and research partner needs;
- Participating in community outreach to support K–12 STEM education and other service activities;
- Initiating new research and partnerships among faculty at Fayetteville State University and other institutions in North Carolina;
- Demonstrating a strong interest and willingness to integrate web-based instructional resources into teaching.
The anticipated start date for the selected candidate is August 2027.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Assistant Professor of Chemistry:
- Earned Ph.D. in Chemistry from an accredited institution;
- Demonstrated ability to teach at the university level;
- Evidence of scholarly, research, and service activities.
Associate Professor of Chemistry:
- Earned Ph.D. in Chemistry from an accredited institution;
- Minimum five (5) years of progressively responsible teaching, research, and/or professional experience in higher education;
- Demonstrated records of effective teaching, scholarly achievement, and service consistent with appointment at the associate professor rank.
Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. in Experimental Physical Chemistry and relevant postdoctoral research experience.

- Teaching and instruction for groups of individuals;
- Effective oral and written communication with peers and students;
- Ability to work effectively and productively with others;
- Strong time management skills;
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior teaching and research experience, especially in experimental physical chemistry.
