About the role

Guards industrial or commercial property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry.

Responsibilities

  • Follow assigned post orders, both general and specific.
  • Apply use of force rules based on the situation; employ graduated use of force to ensure only necessary force is used.
  • Patrol buildings, grounds, docks, logging camp areas, or work sites.
  • Patrol lobbies, corridors, and public rooms; confer with management; interview guests and employees; interrogate persons to detect infringements and investigate disturbances, complaints, thefts, vandalisms, and accidents.
  • Detect fires, unsafe conditions, and missing or inoperative safety equipment.
  • Examine doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are secure.
  • Perform and set thermostatic controls to maintain specified temperature in buildings or cold storage rooms.
  • Inspect equipment and machinery to ascertain if tampering has occurred.
  • Register at watch stations to record time of inspection trips.
  • Inspect assigned areas and record data such as property damage, unusual occurrences, and malfunctioning machinery or equipment for supervisory staff.
  • Watch for and report irregularities such as fire hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked.
  • Warn violators of rule infractions (e.g., loitering, smoking, carrying forbidden articles) and apprehend or expel persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts.
  • Notify staff of presence of persons with questionable reputations.
  • Permit authorized persons and regulate vehicle/pedestrian traffic at plant entrance to maintain orderly flow.
  • Drive radio-equipped vehicle through client’s establishment; check alarms and locate sources of alarm.
  • Sound alarm or call police or fire department by telephone in case of fire or presence of unauthorized persons.
  • Assist management and enforcement officers in emergencies.
  • Contact supervisor by radio or telephone to report irregularities and obtain further instructions.
  • Write investigation and automobile usage reports.
  • In the event of an active shooter, immediately respond by moving toward shots fired to effectively neutralize the threat.

Qualifications

  • Three years of security experience within the past five years; or
  • Three years of military or National Guard (active duty or reserve); or
  • Associate’s degree or higher in a security-related or law enforcement-related field; or
  • Successful completion of a police officer’s basic training academy.

Candidates who do not meet one of these requirements but have equivalent education and/or experience must have special approval.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.
  • Current/valid state driver’s license.
  • Where applicable: State Security Officer License; Certification in the use of weapons; State Armed License if required.
  • Vehicle operators must be at least 25 years of age and have a driving record with no more than one moving violation.
  • Ability to pass a drug screen and criminal background check.

Physical Demands

Personnel shall undergo and successfully pass an approved physical evaluation prior to assignment, demonstrating good physical condition, appropriate endurance, ability to protect themselves and others, effective use of firearms and other equipment, and ability to function in applicable environments and climates. Personnel may be required to run, jump, climb, or crawl.

An annual physical abilities assessment is required to verify continued ability to meet physical requirements, including frequent walking, standing, lifting, climbing, responding to emergencies, and operating security equipment. Assessments will identify any limitations and may require corrective action, medical evaluation, remediation, or reassignment.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
