About the role
Guards industrial or commercial property against fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry.
Responsibilities
- Follow assigned post orders, both general and specific.
- Apply use-of-force rules based on the situation; employ graduated force only as necessary to subdue or detain.
- Patrol buildings, grounds, docks, logging camps, or work sites.
- Patrol lobbies, corridors, and public rooms; confer with management; interview guests and employees; interrogate persons to detect infringements and investigate disturbances, complaints, thefts, vandalisms, and accidents.
- Detect fires, unsafe conditions, and missing or inoperative safety equipment.
- Examine doors, windows, and gates to verify they are secure.
- Set and adjust thermostatic controls to maintain specified temperatures.
- Inspect equipment and machinery for signs of tampering.
- Register at watch stations to record inspection times.
- Record property damage, unusual occurrences, and equipment malfunctions for supervisory staff.
- Report fire hazards, leaking pipes, unlocked security doors, and other irregularities.
- Warn violators of rule infractions (loitering, smoking, forbidden articles) and apprehend or expel persons engaging in suspicious or criminal acts.
- Notify staff of persons with questionable reputations.
- Regulate vehicle and pedestrian traffic at plant entrances to maintain orderly flow.
- Drive radio-equipped vehicle through client’s establishment to check alarms and locate sources.
- Sound alarms or call police/fire departments in case of fire or unauthorized persons.
- Assist management and enforcement officers in emergencies.
- Contact supervisor by radio or telephone to report irregularities and obtain further instructions.
- Write investigation and automobile usage reports.
- In the event of an active shooter, respond by moving toward shots fired to effectively neutralize the threat.

Qualifications
- Three years of security experience within the past five years, or
- Three years of military or National Guard (active duty or reserve), or
- Associate’s degree or higher in a security-related or law enforcement-related field, or
- Successful completion of a police officer’s basic training academy.
- Candidates without one of the above may be considered with equivalent education and/or experience and special approval.
Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to calculate figures and amounts using basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with accuracy.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills
Some posts may require familiarity with Internet programs, word processing software, or other software as required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- CPR/AED/First Aid Certification.
- Current/valid state driver’s license.
- Where applicable: State Security Officer License; Certification in the use of weapons; State Armed License if required.
- Vehicle operators must be at least 25 years of age and have a driving record with no more than one moving violation.
- Ability to pass a drug screen and criminal background check.
Other Qualifications
- Must undergo and pass an approved physical evaluation showing good physical condition, appropriate endurance, and ability to protect self and others.
- Annual physical abilities assessment required to confirm continued ability to perform essential tasks (frequent walking, standing, lifting, climbing, responding to emergencies, operating security equipment).
