Area Manager, Fulfillment

About the role
We are looking for an Area Manager to join our Fulfillment team at our facility in Carlstadt, New Jersey. In this dynamic role, you will play a crucial part in maintaining and reinforcing our commitment to a secure and healthy work environment while driving operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Train and coach a team of warehouse associates, order pickers, packers, and receiving clerks to maintain high productivity and accuracy standards.
- Ensure high levels of process adherence and order quality through floor audits, pick/pack accuracy reviews, and cycle count reconciliations.
- Monitor and report key fulfillment KPIs to management, including units per hour, order accuracy rate, on-time shipment rate, and inventory shrinkage.
- Foster a culture of workplace safety, ergonomic best practices, high service levels, and productivity across all warehouse zones.
- Participate in budget development and oversight for the fulfillment operation, including labor planning, packaging materials, and equipment costs.
- Maintain best practices, sustainable operations, and performance standards aligned with fulfillment center benchmarks.
- Oversee health and safety training and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations specific to warehouse environments (forklift operation, racking safety, hazmat handling, etc.).
- Lead team check-ins/huddles and communicate updates on company policies, SLA targets, and daily operational priorities.
- Coordinate, assign, and review the work of employees engaged in receiving, putaway, picking, packing, shipping, replenishment, and inventory management; coordinate workflow across fulfillment zones; schedule labor by shift and volume forecast.
- Oversee daily space and labor utilization across the fulfillment center, planning efficient slotting strategies and staffing levels based on order volume and SKU velocity.
- Delegate and participate in on-site responsibilities including receiving inbound freight, verifying purchase orders, directing putaway, and supporting packing and shipping operations.
- Solve complex problems in real-time—including order exceptions, inventory discrepancies, equipment downtime, and carrier pickups—while keeping cross-functional leadership informed of outcomes.
- Conduct interviews with prospective team members and make hiring decisions; onboard and train workers in fulfillment procedures, safety protocols, WMS usage, and company policies.
- Lead team development and cultivate values of operational excellence, accuracy, and professionalism across all fulfillment functions.
- Requisition packaging supplies, materials handling equipment, and warehouse consumables.
- Ensure proper operation of warehouse equipment and machinery—including conveyors, forklifts, pallet jacks, and scanners—and coordinate maintenance and repair work.
- May perform the same duties as workers supervised, including picking, packing, and receiving.
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience in fulfillment operations.
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, logistics, supply chain management, or a related field. Advanced degree or certifications (e.g., MBA, PMP, Six Sigma) are a plus.
- 2+ years of managerial experience in a warehouse setting with the ability to execute management directives during a time of exponential growth and supervise a team.
- 2+ years of experience in quality control and monitoring employee productivity/quality in accordance with operating standards.
- Experience in B2C/B2B deliveries and fulfillment in a large facility.
- Exceptional time management skills and ability to prioritize tasks to adhere to critical business deadlines.
- High degree of technological literacy (understanding multiple applications and systems related to business functions).
- Exceptional customer service skills and a demonstrated capacity for interfacing with large, multi-million-dollar clients.
- Experience with inventory management systems and stock taking.
- Experience leading end-to-end performance management cycles.
- Excellent conflict resolution skills, including the ability to de-escalate/mediate conflicts.
- Proven leader in professional team development.
- Highly analytical with problem-solving aptitude.
- Strong decision-making ability.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Punctual and reliable.
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
