MetroHealth System (MHS) utilizes an Anesthesia Care Team (ACT) model to unite Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs) with Staff Anesthesiologists, Student Anesthesiologist Assistants (SAAs), Residents, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), and Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs). CAAs exemplify excellence in all facets of anesthesia practice, including case management, education, and clinical research. Collaborating with an anesthesiologist, they deliver exceptional anesthesia for a wide range of surgical procedures. CAAs must excel in technical, cognitive, and interpersonal skills to drive progress toward a healthier community through dedicated service, education, innovation, and collaborative teamwork.

Schedule

• Monday–Friday, 80 hours biweekly
• Shift: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
• Shift variability upon request
• Minimal in-house weekend call requirement

Responsibilities

• Perform a pre-anesthetic assessment, discuss anesthetic management, and administer anesthesia, all with the consultation of an appropriate staff anesthesiologist in accordance with accepted standards of professional practice and licensing laws.
• Assemble, prepare, and test needed supplies, equipment, and monitors prior to an anesthetic.
• Select, obtain, and administer the anesthetic plan of care, including induction, maintenance, and emergence phases of anesthesia.
• Administer various types of anesthesia, including inhalation, intravenous, spinal, epidural, and peripheral nerve blocks, under the medical direction of staff anesthesiologists.
• Recognize alterations in physiologic responses to the surgical procedure and/or the anesthetic, take appropriate action, and notify the responsible physician as indicated.
• Transfer the patient to the appropriate postoperative area and assist in postoperative care.
• Participate in quality improvement activities and research initiatives within MHS.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school with a bachelor’s degree that includes the prerequisite premedical undergraduate science background.
• Graduate of a medical school-based anesthesiologist’s assistant education program accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
• Current Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA) certification and recertification by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA).
• Current CAA licensure from the Ohio State Medical Board.
• Current ACLS & BLS Certifications.
• Demonstrates current competency in the clinical responsibilities specified.

Physical Requirements

• Full range of motion, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
• Ability to stand and walk for extensive periods of time.
• Ability to lift and transport patients.
• Corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
• Some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
• Ability to work under extreme pressure.
