About the role

The Adult Services Librarian position at the City of Farmington Library is responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating library programs to meet the objectives identified in library planning documents and community needs.

Responsibilities

  • Works under the guidance and direction of the Adult Services Coordinator.
  • Maintains and applies a current knowledge of books, authors, and trends in library services and programs.
  • Provides general and in-depth reference assistance and reader advisory, using a variety of print and online resources.
  • Develops and maintains library collections including, but not limited to, books, periodicals, online databases, and media.
  • Develops marketing materials for promoting library programs, materials, and services.
  • Develops policies and standards with regard to collection development and adult services operations.
  • Participates in professional organizations and activities to stay informed of current and emerging trends in public libraries.
  • Trains library staff and patrons on library programs, services, and technologies.
  • Analyzes and interprets data and reports related to department functions and makes recommendations to the Adult Services Coordinator.
  • Enforces library policies and procedures to library staff and the public.
  • Monitors the work of Adult Services staff for specific projects.
  • Serves on employee committees as required.
  • Represents the library on various community or professional bodies.
  • Attends work as an essential function of the position.

Qualifications

  • This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing.
  • A background check is required.
  • The position requires participation in and compliance with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety Program.
  • A valid New Mexico drivers license with an acceptable driving record for the past three years is required.
  • The position requires availability to work evenings and weekends.
  • A Master of Library Science degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Extensive working knowledge of reference resources, in both print and non-print formats.
  • Considerable knowledge of principles and practices common to modern library operations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills necessary to work effectively with students, volunteers, and part-time and full-time staff.
  • Ability to understand the technology used at the library, to conduct basic troubleshooting of technology-related issues, and to accurately report issues in a timely manner.
  • Broad practical experience with integrated library systems software and subscription databases.
  • Strong collection development skills required.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization, and supervision.
  • Time management skills sufficient to organize work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the general public.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, to effectively interact with all age levels and cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience with public speaking and making presentations.
  • Ability to accurately classify and catalog library materials, based upon a thorough knowledge of library collection, classification, and selection tools and techniques.
  • Ability to perform routine and complex duties as assigned with little or no supervision.
  • Ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in work environment.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality, in accordance with library policies and laws.
  • Proficiency with tools, technology, and equipment listed below.
  • TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Personal computer and applicable software, online subscription databases, automated library management systems (online catalog, self-check, computer reservations, etc.), online event and program applications, electronic devices (such as eReaders, tablets, smart phones, etc.), online applications and social media tools, copier and fax, sound systems and projectors, telephone, and automobile.
