Location: Oak Park, Illinois | Full Time (0.9–1.0 FTE) | Shift 2: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM

About the role

The Admissions Registration Specialist I reviews patient registration for all types of admissions and elective procedures to ensure patient and guarantor demographic and insurance information is complete and current with each visit. You will assist patients with understanding their insurance options and collecting patient financial responsibilities, always advocating for the patient’s best interest and well-being in a courteous, respectful manner.

Responsibilities

• With a high degree of accuracy, collect, verify, and enter into Epic the patient’s demographic, employer, financial, emergency contact, insurance, subscriber, and case-specific information (e.g., referring physician and diagnosis).
• Consistently have the patient sign and scan all required documents for admission: consent, ID, insurance card, MIMS, OBS, COB, etc.
• Accurately obtain and interpret the patient’s insurance benefits and communicate this information clearly to the patient and co-workers.
• Determine the patient’s financial obligation and communicate it accurately and respectfully.
• Perform registration functions in compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulatory agencies, payer requirements, and organizational policies, including HIPAA privacy and security regulations and JACHO standards.
• Upon decision of admission, perform the admission notification (NOA) process—a required communication with the patient’s payer to secure payment for the inpatient stay.
• Inform patients of hospital revenue-cycle policies.
• Minimize financial risk by discussing with patients and/or guarantors their financial responsibility for upcoming visits/procedures, past-due balances, and referral requirements; offer options and negotiate acceptable resolutions.
• Respond to or appropriately direct telephone inquiries from patients, payers, physicians, internal departments, and other entities with strong customer-service skills.
• Collaborate with numerous departments to resolve issues and analyze information to ensure hospital reimbursement.
• Maintain working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws, Rush’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, and other policies to ensure adherence in an ethical, professional manner.
• Protect HIPAA-confidential medical information.
• Attend regular Epic training sessions and other sessions conducted for Admitting staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor/manager.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 0–1 year of experience.
• Basic understanding of core Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
• Excellent communication, customer service, and listening skills.
• Basic keyboarding skills.
• Critical thinking, sound judgment, and strong problem-solving skills.
• Team-oriented, open-minded, flexible, and willing to learn.

Preferred Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration.
• Experience in a hospital or clinic environment, health insurance company, managed care organization, or other healthcare financial service setting performing medical claims processing, financial counseling, financial clearance, accounting, or customer service.
• Knowledge of insurance and governmental programs, regulations, and billing processes (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security Disability, Champus, Supplemental Security Income Disability), managed care contracts, and coordination of benefits.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology.

Pay

$17.63 – $27.77 per hour. Rush salaries are determined by factors including education, job-related experience, skills, and internal equity and market data. Offers may vary based on individual circumstances.
