About the role

The Admissions Registration Specialist I reviews patient registration for all types of admissions and elective procedures to ensure patient and guarantor demographic and insurance information is complete and current with each visit. You will assist patients with understanding their insurance options and collecting patient financial responsibilities, always advocating for the patient’s best interest and well-being in a courteous and respectful manner.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, verify, and enter into Epic the patient’s demographic, employer, financial, emergency contact, insurance, subscriber, and case-specific information (e.g., referring physician and diagnosis) with high accuracy.
  • Obtain patient signatures and scan all required documents (consent, ID, insurance card, MIMS, OBS, COB, etc.) to complete the admission process.
  • Accurately interpret and communicate the patient’s insurance benefits and financial obligations to the patient and co-workers.
  • Perform registration functions in compliance with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies, payer requirements, and organizational policies, including HIPAA and JACHO standards.
  • Perform the admission notification (NOA) process to secure payment for the patient’s inpatient stay.
  • Inform patients of hospital revenue-cycle policies and minimize financial risk by discussing financial responsibilities, past-due balances, and referral requirements.
  • Offer payment options and negotiate acceptable resolutions for estimated patient balances.
  • Respond to or direct telephone inquiries from patients, payers, physicians, internal departments, and other entities with strong customer service skills.
  • Collaborate with other departments to resolve issues and ensure hospital reimbursement.
  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, Rush’s Organizational Integrity Program, and HIPAA to ensure ethical and professional behavior.
  • Protect confidential medical information in compliance with HIPAA.
  • Attend regular EPIC training sessions and other relevant training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor/manager.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 0–1 year of experience.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and listening skills.
  • Basic keyboarding skills.
  • Strong critical thinking, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Team-oriented, open-minded, flexible, and willing to learn.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritize and function effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time and tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration.
  • Experience in a hospital, clinic, health insurance company, or managed care organization performing medical claims processing, financial counseling, or customer service.
  • Knowledge of insurance and governmental programs (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security Disability, Champus) and billing processes.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology.

Pay

$17.63 – $27.77 per hour. Rush salaries are determined by factors including education, job-related experience, skills, and internal equity.
