About the role

The Admissions Registration Specialist I reviews patient registration for all types of admissions and elective procedures to ensure patient and guarantor demographic and insurance information is complete and current with each visit. You will assist patients with understanding their insurance options and collecting patient financial responsibilities, always advocating for the patient’s best interest and well-being in a courteous, respectful manner.

Schedule

  • Full Time (0.9–1.0 FTE)
  • Shift 1: 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM, 8-hour days

Pay

Pay range: $17.63 – $27.77 per hour. Rush salaries consider education, job-related experience, skills, internal equity, and market data.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, verify, and enter into Epic the patient’s demographic, employer, financial, emergency contact, insurance, subscriber, and case-specific information (e.g., referring physician and diagnosis) with high accuracy.
  • Obtain patient signatures and scan all required documents (consent, ID, insurance card, MIMS, OBS, COB, etc.) to complete the admission process.
  • Accurately obtain, interpret, and communicate the patient’s insurance benefits and financial obligation to the patient and co-workers.
  • Perform registration functions in compliance with Federal, State, and Local regulatory agencies, payer requirements, and organizational policies, including HIPAA and JACHO.
  • Perform the admission notification (NOA) process to secure payment for the patient’s inpatient stay.
  • Inform patients of hospital revenue-cycle policies and minimize financial risk by discussing upcoming balances, past-due amounts, and referral requirements.
  • Offer payment options and negotiate acceptable resolutions for estimated patient balances.
  • Respond to telephone inquiries from patients, payers, physicians, internal departments, and other entities with excellent customer service, escalating to a supervisor when needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments to resolve issues and ensure hospital reimbursement.
  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable laws, Rush’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, and other policies to ensure ethical, professional behavior and HIPAA compliance.
  • Attend regular EPIC and other training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor/manager.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 0–1 year of experience.
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and listening skills.
  • Basic keyboarding skills.
  • Critical thinking, sound judgment, and strong problem-solving skills.
  • Team-oriented, open-minded, flexible, and willing to learn.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to prioritize and function effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time and tasks.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy, consistency, and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Accounting or Business Administration.
  • Experience in a hospital, clinic, health insurance company, managed care organization, or other healthcare financial service setting performing medical claims processing, financial counseling, financial clearance, accounting, or customer service.
  • Knowledge of insurance and governmental programs, regulations, and billing processes (e.g., Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security Disability, Champus, Supplemental Security Income Disability), managed care contracts, and coordination of benefits.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology.
