About the Role

The Unemployment Compensation Review Commission (“the Commission”) is an independent agency that conducts fair due process hearings on unemployment insurance matters appealed by claimants and employers. The Commission reviews facts and may affirm, reverse, remand, or modify decisions made by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). This role supports the Commission’s operations through administrative and clerical duties.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Program Administrator 2 with daily administrative office functions, including making recommendations on program activities and developing new procedures aligned with Commission policy.
  • Perform routine administrative duties such as processing commission lower/higher appeals.
  • Prepare statistical data (e.g., number of appeals, documents) and work on special projects as directed.
  • Provide administrative support for the Commission-level docketing process:
    • Ensure timely processing of higher authority appeals.
    • Docket, review, and summarize Commission votes.
    • Prepare monthly allow/disallow reports for the public meeting agenda.
  • Act as proxy to confirm and input votes in the appeals system.
  • Serve as backup for the court appeals process, including:
    • Requesting transcripts and compiling the record.
    • Collaborating with the Attorney General’s Office to file the appellate record.
  • Provide administrative support for the hearing officer attorney team:
    • Maintain hearing schedules.
    • Compile hearing preparation documents.
    • Assist with the Phantom Docket Process.
    • Track assistance provided.
  • Respond to inquiries and requests for electronic or hard copies of hearings and Commission files:
    • Print and prepare hard copies of files for requesting parties.
    • Redact confidential information from electronic files before distribution.
    • Prepare and release electronic dictation of hearings for appeals filed in common pleas court on CD.
  • Correspond via email or letter with interested parties regarding information requests.
  • Receive and monitor all incoming physical and electronic mail (USPS, internal, scanned documents, faxes):
    • Look up case information and route documents to the appropriate department.
    • Determine document type and direct it for further action.
    • Attach pertinent documentation to the Commission file in the appropriate electronic location.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including:
    • Customer service and hearing line backup.
    • Administrative functions such as handling overpayments, subpoenas, dismissals, withdrawals, and vacates.

Qualifications

At minimum, candidates must meet one of the following options:

  • Option 1: Completion of associate core coursework in secretarial science or business office applications from an accredited career school or community college.
  • Option 2: 18 months of experience or training in the secretarial/administrative professional field.
  • Option 3: 6 months of experience as an Administrative Professional 1 (Job Code: 16871).
  • Option 4: Equivalent of the minimum class qualifications noted above.

Schedule

  • Type: Part-time (39 hours per week).
  • Days: Monday through Friday.
  • Hours: Between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Pay

This position is in the State of Ohio’s OCSEA Pay Schedule, Pay Range 28, currently $23.65 per hour.

Location and Travel

  • Primary Location: Rhodes State Office Tower, 30 E. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43215 (Franklin County).
  • Remote Work: Primary work location is on-site.
  • Travel: Occasional travel may be required for training and Program Area meetings.
