Shift: 12‑Hour Day Shift (3 × 12‑hour shifts per week, 7 a.m.–7 p.m. or 7 p.m.–7 a.m.; day and night shifts available)

About the role

Registered Nurse on the 5 South 40‑bed medical‑surgical unit caring for acutely ill adults specializing in urology, nephrology, trauma, colorectal surgery, and general body systems. The unit partners with Virtual Nurse partners to provide collaborative patient care.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized, high‑quality nursing care to patients of all ages.
• Use a team approach to delegate and coordinate patient care at admission, transfer, and discharge.
• Deliver nursing care independently in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, Mercy Medical Center policies, nursing standards, ethical principles, and professional judgment.
• Work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care while ensuring patient comfort and practicing safe patient‑handling techniques.
• Identify and respond to educational and emotional needs of patients and families.
• Guide and direct healthcare personnel such as Patient Care Technicians.
• Maintain knowledge of equipment set‑up, maintenance, and use (e.g., IV pumps, monitoring equipment, drainage devices).
• Utilize safeguards such as IV pump drug libraries and monitor alarms to maximize patient safety.
• Initiate emergency support measures, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and injury protection.

Requirements

• Current or compact state licensure as a Registered Nurse in Iowa.
• Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three months of hire.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification within six weeks of hire.
