About the role

A medical/surgical nurse provides care for patients across the lifespan with physical, emotional, or psychological health alterations. The role involves assessing, diagnosing, and implementing plans to achieve health outcomes in various settings, including acute and chronic care.

Responsibilities

  • Collects and analyzes patient data to identify health issues and set achievable goals.
  • Develops and implements care plans tailored to each patient's needs.
  • Evaluates patient progress and adjusts care plans as necessary.
  • Communicates effectively with patients and colleagues to ensure clear understanding and adherence to treatment plans.
  • Maintains a supportive environment that fosters open communication and mutual respect among team members.
  • Participates in ongoing education and professional development to stay current with best practices and advancements in nursing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Registered Nurse (RN) certification with a multistate license in Kansas.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Preferred skills include awareness of legal and safety issues, effective communication, and mathematical proficiency.

Qualifications

  • Compliance with Stormont Vail Health policies, standards, and mandatory training.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical demands include balancing, carrying, climbing, crawling, crouching, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions.
  • Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous drugs, and other hazards.

Skills

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Mathematical proficiency for medication administration and equipment calibration.
  • Ability to adapt the nursing process to meet diverse patient needs.
  • Knowledge of Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring.
