ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) Senior Clinical Psychiatrist – Part Time

The City of Alexandria is located in northern Virginia and is bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. With a population of approximately 150,000 and a land area of 15.75 square miles, Alexandria is a unique and historic place to live and work. About one-quarter square miles in the city have been designated as a national or local historic district.

About the role

The Senior Clinical Psychiatrist oversees all psychiatric service operations for the assertive community treatment team including supervising a psychiatric nurse practitioner, providing direct services, and maintaining a medication room. Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) follows the SAMHSA service delivery model for treatment of adults with persistent mental illness.

Responsibilities

• Provides complete and detailed psychiatric evaluation and diagnostic services.
• Uses the time allocated for initial psychiatric evaluations and medication management to ensure a therapeutic environment and safety.
• Provides a therapeutic environment conducive to a healthy relationship between the client and the psychiatrist.
• Reviews client clinical records to assure adequacy and proper prescription of medications.
• Educates clients, family members, or legal representatives regarding the nature and treatment of psychiatric illness, medications, and other treatment/rehabilitation techniques.
• Obtains informed consent for medications in accordance with policies and procedures; ensures clients are free to ask questions regarding medication services and any treatment options.
• Provides individual medication services on a regular basis, including following standards of care, monitoring possible side effects, and referring to outside physicians when indicated.
• Prescribes and delivers medication according to rules and regulations of the Boards of Medicine and Pharmacy.
• Provides oversight of ACT medication room.
• Maintains clear and detailed correlation of all written documentation required for maintaining client clinical records; prepares or signs reports in a timely manner, ensures handwritten documents are legible and in accordance with safety writing procedures.
• Participates in daily team meetings.
• Ensures harmonious working relationships with co-workers, clients, and others.
• Provides crisis intervention and/or ensures flexibility to intervene in emergency situations.
• Provides consultation services to, and develops treatment plans with, clients and staff.
• Provides guidance and leadership with ACT clients.
• Administers medications in emergency situations.
• Provides psychiatric services where needed by clients including in homes, shelters, and other community locations.
• Performs related work as required.

About the department

The Center for Adult Services (CAS) provides programs and services in Aging; Adult Protective Services; Clinical & Emergency Services; and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and for persons with mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and substance use disorders. CAS provides compassionate and effective person-centered services based on best practices. Our teams support self-determination, safety, and recovery for Alexandria residents affected by abuse, neglect, mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and substance abuse disorders.

Requirements

• Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as a General Psychiatrist (Diplomate).
• Possession of a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy Degree.
• Three years of experience in the practice of Psychiatry at the level of Clinical Psychiatrist.
• Satisfactory completion of a residency program in Psychiatry; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Possession of a current, valid license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Possession of a license of registration with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
• Ability to hold a National Provider Identifier (NPI).

Preferred Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license.
• Board certification in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as well as Adult Psychiatry.
• At least three years’ experience in the supervision and administration of an outpatient or inpatient clinical psychiatric service.
• Bilingual with English/Spanish, French, African, or Middle Eastern language skills.

Schedule

Part-Time / 20 hours per week. Flexible schedule & hours to be decided upon hire.
