Accounting Clerk 2
This is a full-time position with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State-Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of State Training School (STS).
About the role
STS offers a holistic social, behavioral, psychiatric, academic, and vocational program that utilizes evidence-based practices to provide a secure setting, rooted in treatment, for males ages 12 to 18 years old who have been adjudicated delinquent. STS provides individualized treatment plans and offers comprehensive education with the goal of successfully transitioning young men back into the community.
Responsibilities
- Perform accounting, banking, and record keeping of student funds and other non-appropriated accounts.
- Serve as receptionist for the Business Office.
- Document all funds received and make deposits.
- Identify students who may be eligible for Social Security benefits and apply for the State Training School to be the representative payee for those students.
- Issue checks as needed for student expenses and other non-appropriated purchases.
- Maintain documentation of all invoices and receipts for expenditures.
- Maintain equipment and tool inventories for the facility, including Fixed Asset inventory, vocational tools and equipment, and maintenance tools and equipment.
- Submit monthly reimbursement claims for the school meal/snack program and submit financial dietary reports to the Department of Education, as required.
- Order supplies for the Business Office, complete state vehicle reports, fill in for the Superintendent’s secretary in their absence.
- Attend and participate in all annual mandatory trainings.

Requirements
- Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalency.
- Two years of clerical accounting experience which involved the compilation, tabulation, examination, verification or recording of financial, statistical or related fiscal data using elementary bookkeeping principles and practices; OR
- Successful completion of a post-high school vocational/technical, business college, or area community college curriculum in accounting which included concentrated course work equivalent to twenty semester hours (or more) in accounting; OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of employment in clerical office work for each year of the required education; OR
- Substituting the successful completion of thirty semester hours or the academic equivalent in a post high school Business, Accounting or closely related curriculum for each year of the required experience; OR
- Any equivalent combination of qualifying education or experience; OR
- Employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of twelve months of full-time work as an Accounting Clerk 1.

STS is located in Eldora, a quaint community with a population of approximately 2,800 residents in north central Iowa.
