Academic Professional Track (Non-Tenure): Clinical Assistant/Clinical Associate/Full Clinical Professor - Equine Soft Tissue
Texas A&M University’s Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) invites applications for a full-time, 11-month/year, academic professional track (non-tenure) faculty position in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery. The appointment may be at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor, Clinical Associate Professor, or Clinical Professor, based on qualifications and experience. The anticipated start date is Winter 2026.
About the role
This position allocates effort as follows: 50–60% clinical service, 20–30% didactic teaching, 10–20% scholarly activities, and 10% service. The successful candidate will demonstrate a collegial, team-centered work attitude and excellent communication skills with animal owners, faculty colleagues, veterinary students, house officers, technicians, and hospital staff. Faculty members are expected to uphold the VMBS Code of Professional Conduct.
Clinical service
The Equine Soft Tissue Surgery service is shared by two surgeons on a rotational basis. The team includes 2–3 full-time technicians, surgery residents, and interns. The caseload encompasses upper airway, urogenital, gastrointestinal, and body wall/integument cases, handling both elective and emergency cases. All surgeons participate in after-hours and holiday coverage, supported by two dedicated emergency surgeons.
Diagnostic and surgical resources include:
- 1 m and 3 m endoscopes, dynamic endoscopy, ultrasound, and advanced diagnostic imaging (CT/MRI)
- Five operating-room suites for orthopedic, soft-tissue, and colic cases
- Separate standing surgery suites for laparoscopy/laser surgery and dental procedures
- 24/7 intensive-care unit and isolation facility
- Covered riding arena and non-climate-controlled stalls
Teaching
The faculty member will:
- Train surgery residents, interns, and veterinary students in clinical settings
- Teach didactic courses in the pre-clinical veterinary curriculum
- Instruct fourth-year veterinary students on the soft-tissue rotation
- Participate in departmental and interdepartmental rounds and seminars
- Mentor rotating interns and residents
Effective teaching and the development of innovative instructional delivery are encouraged and valued.
Scholarly activity
The faculty member will contribute to collaborative research and scholarly activity aligned with the College’s missions. Independent, clinically-oriented research is encouraged for those with appropriate interests and expertise. The department includes over 50 faculty members across College Station and the Veterinary Education Research and Outreach (VERO) program at West Texas A&M University in Canyon.
Facilities and community
Clinical units at College Station include Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Surgery, Equine Theriogenology, Equine Primary Care, Equine Sports Medicine, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, Food Animal Field Services, and Diagnostic Imaging. The department also provides ambulatory service to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice animal units.
Pre-clinical training occurs in the 330,000-square-foot Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex (VBEC), featuring lecture halls, laboratories, small-group learning spaces, and hands-on skills training. The VERO facility, a 34,000-square-foot center completed in 2020, supports research, clinical rotations, and outreach focused on the livestock industry and rural communities in the Texas Panhandle.
The Bryan-College Station metropolitan area has a combined population of approximately 300,000, offering a wide range of cultural and recreational opportunities, excellent schools, and a relatively low cost of living.
Requirements
- DVM (or equivalent) degree
- Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or eligibility to take Phase II of the ACVS examination
- Interest, experience, training, and expertise in teaching pre-clinical and clinical programs
- Ability to provide high-quality patient care for a referral population of large animal surgical patients
- Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the State of Texas
- Possession of, or eligibility for, a DEA certificate
