Tenure-Track/Tenured: Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor - Equine Soft Tissue

Texas A&M University’s Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) invites applications for a full-time, 11-month/year, tenure-track or tenured faculty position in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery. The appointment is at the Tenured or Tenure-Track rank (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor), with an anticipated start date of Winter 2026.

About the Role

The faculty position allocates effort as follows: 40-50% clinical service, 10-20% didactic teaching, 30-40% research and scholarly activities, and 10% service. Applicants must demonstrate a collegial, team-centered work attitude and excellent communication skills with animal owners, faculty colleagues, veterinary and graduate students, house officers, technicians, and hospital staff. Faculty members are expected to commit to the VMBS code of professional conduct.

Responsibilities

• Develop and sustain an extramurally funded, creative, and productive research program in relevant fields of interest, involving professional students, residents, and/or graduate students.
• Contribute to collaborative research aligned with the College’s research, teaching, and clinical service missions.
• Provide clinical service in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery, including upper airway, urogenital, gastrointestinal, and body wall/integument cases, with shared after-hours and holiday coverage.
• Participate in the education of graduate students, professional veterinary students, and the clinical training of surgery residents and interns.
• Teach didactic courses for pre-clinical veterinary students, provide clinical instruction for fourth-year students on the soft tissue rotation, and engage in departmental and interdepartmental rounds and seminars.
• Develop innovative instructional delivery methods and contribute to pedagogical support through the Center for Educational Technologies.

Clinical Environment

The Equine Soft Tissue Surgery service is staffed by 2 surgeons on a rotational basis, supported by 2-3 full-time technicians, surgery residents, and interns. Diagnostic equipment includes 1m and 3m endoscopes, dynamic endoscopy, ultrasound, and advanced imaging such as CT/MRI. The facility features:

• Five operating suites for orthopedic, soft tissue, and colic cases, plus separate standing surgery suites for laparoscopy/laser surgery and dental procedures.
• A 24/7 intensive care unit and isolation facility.
• Outdoor facilities including a covered riding arena and non-climate-controlled stalls.

Department Overview

The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences includes over 50 faculty members across the Texas A&M University campus in College Station and the Veterinary Education Research and Outreach (VERO) program at West Texas A&M University in Canyon. Clinical units at College Station include Equine Internal Medicine, Equine Surgery, Equine Theriogenology, Equine Primary Care, Equine Sports Medicine, Food Animal Medicine and Surgery, Food Animal Field Services, and Diagnostic Imaging. The department also provides ambulatory service to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice animal units.

Pre-clinical training occurs in the 330,000-square-foot Veterinary & Biomedical Education Complex (VBEC), featuring state-of-the-art lecture halls, laboratories, and hands-on skills training. The VERO facility, completed in 2020, supports research, clinical rotations, and outreach initiatives focused on the livestock industry and rural communities in the Texas Panhandle.

Requirements

• DVM (or equivalent) degree.
• PhD in a relevant field.
• Board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or eligibility to take Phase II of the ACVS examination.
• Established research program or positive trajectory in scholarly activity.
• Experience and expertise in teaching clinical programs and graduate education.
• Ability to provide high-quality patient care for a referral population of large animal surgical patients.
• Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the State of Texas.
• Possession of, or eligibility for, a DEA certificate.
