Academic Professional Track (Non-Tenure): Clinical Assistant/Associate Professor - Orthopedic Surgery

About the role

The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) at Texas A&M University seeks a full-time, 11-month/year, clinical non-tenure track faculty member at the rank of assistant or associate professor in Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery. Clinical duties and development of the orthopedic service will be shared with four other orthopedic surgeons.

The successful candidate will interact with over 60 faculty members in the department and an active group of house officers, including more than 50 rotating interns and residents in various medical and surgical disciplines.

Time allocation: 65–75% clinical instruction and patient care, 10–15% classroom/laboratory teaching, 5–10% scholarship, and 10% service.

Responsibilities

• Primary management of orthopedic surgical cases in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH).
• Instruction of veterinary students and mentorship of interns and surgical residents.
• Participation in after-hours surgical emergency coverage, which may include soft tissue or neurosurgical coverage based on candidate expertise and service needs.
• Commitment to a team-centered atmosphere and excellent communication with animal caregivers, faculty, students, house officers, technicians, and staff.
• Adherence to the VMBS code of professional conduct.

Requirements

• DVM (or equivalent) degree.
• Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or completion of an ACVS-approved residency with eligibility to take the board exam.
• Licensed or eligible for regular or special license to practice veterinary medicine in Texas.

Skills

• Basic proficiency in stifle, elbow, and shoulder arthroscopy.
• Experience with minimally invasive fracture repair.
• Treatment of complex angular limb deformities.
• Exposure to current total joint replacement techniques.

Facilities & Resources

The VMTH is equipped with:

• Two modern digital radiography suites.
• Complete arthroscopy capabilities.
• Two intraoperative fluoroscopy units.
• Onsite 40-slice CT and 3T MRI.
• Nuclear scintigraphy, force-plate and kinematic gait analysis, and biomechanics and regenerative medicine laboratories.
• Mimics and Echopixel licenses for 3D reconstruction and model printing.
• A wide array of implant systems, including multiple locking plate systems, interlocking nails, and linear/circular external skeletal fixation sets.

Support personnel include ICU technicians, a multidisciplinary interventional radiology service, three in-house pharmacists with compounding capability, and a clinical trials coordinator.

A new 135,000 square-foot hospital is under construction, scheduled to open in August 2027.
