About the role

The SOAR TRIO (Student Outreach and Academic Retention Student Support Services Program for Health Sciences / TRIO) Program serves between 160-180 students annually, consisting of low-income, first-generation and students with a disability within the College of Health and Social Sciences (CHSS).

Responsibilities

  • Proactive academic advising, guidance, and retention support to encourage participant academic success.
  • Holistic assessment of the academic, career, and/or personal needs of participants to offer appropriate services and resources.
  • Assistance with transcript review, financial aid application, declaration of major/change of major, completing academic requirements, class registration, and graduate school exploration and resources.
  • Aids participants to complete program milestones, forms, and records.
  • Appropriately advocates for needs of participants to University entities/offices.
  • Assists to resolve problems that affects participant’s ability to succeed in their educational and career pursuits.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to campus support offices.
  • Aids in the creation and execution of program workshops, community building activities, tutoring support efforts and other activities as assigned.
  • Serves as a liaison to internal and external campus partners and the public at-large.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.
  • Master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply fundamental concepts.
  • Working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of the program to which assigned.
  • General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management.
  • General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
  • Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements.
  • Ability to obtain factual and interpretive information through interviews.
  • Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentation based on these data.
  • Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
  • Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Sciences, Counseling, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience advising students with academic, social, and personal challenges.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in presenting or facilitating workshops, career counseling, case management, and/or crisis intervention.
  • Experience working with issues and obstacles similar to those confronting program participants.
  • Experience planning academic support and retention initiatives.
  • Knowledge of undergraduate and graduate school application requirements, CHSS majors, and transcript evaluation.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and management skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Highly proficient with use of computers (PC and Apple), Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel and Outlook), cloud computing and storage (Box), Canva, working use of social media applications (Instagram, Facebook, etc.), and working knowledge of CSU systems, like EAB (Education Advisory Board), CS (campus Solutions), Canvas, and Docusign/Adobe Ink.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and management skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication abilities.

Pay

$2,541.50 per month ($30,498.00 annually) @ 0.5FTE
$5,083.00 per month ($60,996.00 annually) @ 1.0FTE

Schedule

Part-Time; 0.50 FTE
Monday through Friday; from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm
