About the role
The Ferguson College of Agriculture at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK, is seeking applications for Academic Advisors. The position plays a crucial role in guiding undergraduate students through their academic journeys and connecting them with the resources they need to succeed.
Responsibilities
- Advising students concerning program inquiries, academic plans and progress, academic schedule, choice of major, and other academic activities and career goals.
- Proactively reaching out to students in various situations to offer support and assist them in making decisions concerning personal educational goals leading to graduation.
- Maintaining accurate, confidential student records and ensuring documentation integrity.
- Interpreting academic records and placement information, and using data to track student progress and inform advising decisions.
- Providing academic counseling and developmental guidance, including support related to course selection, goal setting, career exploration, and academic challenges.
- Evaluating petitions and supporting decision-making processes related to academic issues.
- Assisting with teaching up to two sections of UNIV 1111 (Freshman Seminar).
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree (must be conferred on or before the start date)
- Starting salary based on education and prior relevant work experience.
- A master's degree may be substituted for up to three (3) years of required experience.
- Terminal degrees may warrant adjustment to years of experience equivalency.
- Experience in a comparable position as follows:
- Academic Advisor I: Bachelor’s Degree and zero – two years of experience.
- Academic Advisor II: Bachelor’s Degree and two to three years of experience.
- Academic Advisor III: Bachelor’s Degree and three to five years of experience.
- Senior Academic Advisor I: Bachelor's Degree and five to seven years of experience.
- Senior Academic Advisor II: Bachelor’s Degree and seven years of experience.
- Teaching up to two sections of UNIV IIII.
- Administrative experience that could include responsibility with unit programs and/or student groups; supervisory experience to include interviewing, training and development, etc. of employees and/or student leaders; and/or coordination of special projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (must be conferred on or before the start date)
- Master's degree (may substitute for up to three (3) years of required experience)
- At least one degree in studies related to agriculture or natural resources.
- At least two years of advising experience and/or higher education experience.
- Strong knowledge of academic programs, degree requirements, curricula, and course prerequisites.
- Understanding of university academic policies, procedures, and regulations, particularly those related to graduation, enrollment, and transfer credit.
- Proficiency with advising technologies and student information systems.
- Experience in teaching high school or college students.
- Ability to provide academic counseling and developmental guidance, including support related to course selection, goal setting, career exploration, and academic challenges.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills to address academic issues, evaluate petitions, and support decision making.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional development and staying current with advising and higher education best practices.

- Knowledge & Technical Skills: Ability to maintain accurate, confidential student records and ensure documentation integrity; Ability to quickly learn information and data management systems for use in advising and mentoring situations.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex information clearly and support students in decision making; Ability to effectively present information in large group settings; Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to build rapport and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Advising & Student Support Skills: Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with the student population, applying inclusive and responsive advising practices; Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment and maintain positive working relationships.
- Analytical & Problem-Solving: Ability to assess student needs, interpret data, and identify appropriate interventions or resources.
- Organizational & Professional Skills: Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accuracy under pressure; Positive, proactive attitude with the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
