About the role
The Academic Advisor II provides general advising for first-time freshmen, second-year students (specifically those on academic probation), and General Education and graduation requirements for transfer and continuing students. The incumbent needs to be sensitive to the needs of a diverse student population.
Responsibilities
- Provide advising services to first-time freshmen, second-year students on academic probation, and transfer and continuing students regarding General Education and graduation requirements.
- Engage students in a developmental process to help clarify and implement individual educational plans consistent with their skills, interests, and values.
- Offer advice and support to students in a manner that respects and accommodates diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Requirements
- Two years of professional experience in a student services program area or related field.
- A master's degree in a job-related field may substitute for one year of the professional experience.
- Knowledge of General Education in the California State University system.
- Ability to work occasional morning, evenings, and weekends.

- Working knowledge of the practices, procedures, and activities of the program to which assigned.
- General knowledge of research and interview techniques.
- Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations.
- Reasoning ability to solve problems and make decisions.
- Resourcefulness in planning work assignments and implementing long-range program improvements.
- Ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews.
- Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
- Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
- Ability to recognize multicultural, multisexed, and multi-aged value systems and work accordingly.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies, and others in committee work and student advising and community contacts.
- Rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions, and programs of the campus to which assigned.
- Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas.
Skills
- Independent prioritization, planning, and organizing work in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to provide direct programs and/or services to a diverse student population.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in a diverse environment.
- Proficiency using standard office software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Familiarity working with university-based record/data systems/software (example: PeopleSoft).
- Ability to understand, interpret, and apply moderately complex rules, policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive work environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community.

Pay
The anticipated hiring range is $5,083 per month, with the anticipated hiring rate at the minimum of the classification salary range.
Schedule
Full-time position with 8:00am-5:00pm, M-F, other occasional hours as needed. Summer Hours are 7:30am - 4:00pm.
