About the role
The College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology (CEAT) Student Academic Services seeks to fill two Academic Advisor positions.
Responsibilities
- Provides holistic, student-centered guidance to a caseload of students, supporting their academic planning, course selection, and progress toward graduation.
- Affirms student needs, interprets university policies, and makes appropriate referrals while elevating complex issues to advising leadership as needed.
- Promotes student success through ongoing communication, directed outreach, monitoring academic performance, accurate documentation within university systems, and participation in standard university-wide events, including Orientation and Enrollment (O&E) and Commencement.
- Guides students through essential processes—including forms, appeals, and procedural requirements—while ensuring timely, clear responses to inquiries.
- In collaboration with colleagues and academic departments, contributes to student success initiatives, offers feedback on curriculum and policy, and may serve as a mentor within the advising team.
- Advising at OSU expects that advisors will demonstrate knowledge and implement NACADA Core Values and Core Competencies in their practice.
Requirements
- Academic Advisor I: Bachelor’s Degree and zero – two years of experience in a comparable position.
- Academic Advisor II: Bachelor’s Degree and two to three years of experience in comparable position.
- Teach up to two sections of UNIV 1111.
- Academic Advisor III: Bachelor’s Degree and three to five years of experience in a comparable position.
- Teach up to two sections of UNIV 1111.
- Senior Academic Advisor I: Bachelor's Degree and five to seven years of experience in a comparable position.
- Teach up to two sections of UNIV 1111.
- Senior Academic Advisor II: Bachelor’s Degree and seven years of experience in a comparable position.
- Teach up to two sections of UNIV 1111.
- Administrative experience that could include responsibility with unit programs and/or student groups; supervisory experience to include interviewing, training and development, etc. of employees and/or student leaders; and/or coordination of special projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree
- Master’s Degree may be substituted for up to three (3) years of required experience.
- Terminal degrees may warrant adjustment to years of experience equivalency.

- Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree and zero – two years of experience in a comparable position.
- Preferred Qualifications: Master's Degree in Higher Education, Academic Counseling or Advising or related field; an undergraduate degree in Engineering, Architecture or Engineering Technology; Professional experience as an academic advisor or in an industry closely related to CEAT majors.

- Knowledge & Technical Skills: Ability to maintain accurate, confidential student records and ensure documentation integrity.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex information clearly and support students in decision making; Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to build rapport and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Advising & Student Support Skills: Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with the student population, applying inclusive and culturally responsive advising practices.
- Analytical & Problem-Solving: Ability to assess student needs, interpret data, and identify appropriate interventions or resources.
- Organizational & Professional Skills: Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accuracy under pressure; Positive, proactive attitude with the ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
