Wage range: $23–$33.00/hour plus $1.00 shift differential. Full-time, 2nd shift position reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor.
About the role
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all production and utility systems within the facility. Core equipment includes motors, gearboxes, pneumatic controls, conveying systems, boilers, air compressors, CO₂ or Freon-based refrigeration units, and plant support infrastructure. The role requires strict adherence to USDA guidelines, GMP standards, and all facility safety protocols, including LOTO, confined space, and hot work procedures.
Responsibilities
- Report to the Maintenance Supervisor and communicate effectively with Maintenance, QA, and Operations supervisors.
- Maintain and repair all production equipment, including pumps, tumblers, evaporators, dryers, valves, baggers, injectors, slicers, and packaging machines.
- Inspect, operate, or test machinery to diagnose malfunctions.
- Dismantle machines or equipment to access and remove defective parts using hoists, hand tools, or power tools.
- Perform preventive maintenance, such as inspecting drives, motors, or belts, checking fluid levels, replacing filters, and other routine tasks.
- Replace worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts and troubleshoot electrical controls and components.
- Order and maintain inventories for parts to service all plant-wide equipment.
- Document schematic and diagram changes to keep plant records current.
- Work with minimal supervision and report daily work orders and activity.
- Climb stairs and ladders, work in congested areas, and operate in temperatures ranging from 0°F to 130°F.
- Follow all company policies, including Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Safe Quality Foods (SQF), and safety rules.
- Communicate with technical support for equipment issues and follow up on pending repairs.
- Read electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic schematics, and blueprints to identify problems and provide solutions while adhering to food safety and safety guidelines.
- Share knowledge with the team and participate in ongoing training.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements
- Minimum of three years’ experience in plant maintenance or a related field.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Proficiency in verbal and written communication, with basic computation skills.
- Ability to read and understand written and verbal instructions, electrical schematics, hydraulic/pneumatic diagrams, and blueprints.
- Experience with motors, gearboxes, pneumatic controls, conveying systems, boilers, air compressors, and refrigeration units.
- Current forklift operator’s license or ability to acquire and maintain required certification.
- Ability to work in a quick, efficient, and safe manner while following all safety procedures.
- Strong teamwork skills and a positive attitude.
- Ability to lead by example with honesty, initiative, and drive.
Physical Demands
- Standing, walking, and sitting for extended periods, including standing for 8–12 hours per shift.
- Lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds repetitively; occasional lifting above 50 pounds.
- Frequent pushing, pulling, bending, stooping, squatting, and occasional kneeling or crawling.
- Frequent twisting, turning, climbing, balancing, reaching, grasping, and manipulating objects.
- Exposure to temperatures ranging from 0°F to 130°F.
- Work in noisy environments requiring hearing protection.
- Use of non-slip footwear and rubber gloves due to slippery/wet floors.
- Potential exposure to ammonia, acids, caustics, chlorines, paints, particles, oils, lubricants, steam, pneumatics, fumes, hazardous gases, and sealing compounds.
