About the Role

The Physics Department at California State University, Fresno seeks qualified candidates to teach undergraduate courses such as Physics 2A, Physics 2B, Physics 4A, Physics 4B, PSCI 21, or other classes identified to fulfill educational goals. Temporary faculty members are responsible for adhering to university and system-wide policies, preparing and delivering lectures, conducting office hours, assigning and grading homework, quizzes, projects, and exams, and ensuring classes meet as scheduled in the assigned mode (asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Appointments are contingent upon budget, enrollment considerations, and the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and the California Faculty Association. Appointees must demonstrate eligibility to work in the U.S.; the university does not sponsor Temporary Faculty for work visas.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, deliver, and proctor lectures, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, and midterm/final exams.
  • Conduct office hours as required.
  • Grade assignments and exams.
  • Ensure classes meet as scheduled throughout the semester in the assigned mode (asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).
  • Adhere to university and system-wide academic policies.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree in Physics or a closely related field from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, evidenced by prior teaching experience and evaluations or other documentation.
  • Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
  • Experience with laboratory instruction.

Schedule

This is a temporary, part-time lecturer pool. Positions are filled as needed based on student enrollment and funding, with appointments often made just prior to the start of the academic term. Applicants may need to begin teaching on short notice. The pool remains active for two academic terms; reapplication is required to remain in the pool beyond that period.

  • Fall 2026: August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026
  • Spring 2027: January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027

Pay

Compensation is commensurate with qualifications and experience, based on the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers). The monthly salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master’s degree is $5,507–$6,677 when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are typically at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary is adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per academic term.
