About the Department

The Department of Mathematics at California State University, Fresno offers in-person undergraduate courses and seeks qualified candidates to teach a variety of classes, including:

  • College Algebra
  • Pre-calculus
  • Introductory Statistics
  • Calculus
  • Upper division statistics and applied mathematics courses
  • Other classes identified to fulfill educational goals

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to and implement university and system-wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306, paragraph 2.
  • Prepare, deliver, conduct, proctor, and grade lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, and midterm and final exams.
  • Ensure all classes meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester in the assigned mode.

Appointment Details

This is a temporary, part-time lecturer position filled as needed based on student enrollment and funding. Appointments are contingent upon budget, enrollment considerations, and the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and the California Faculty Association. The order of work prioritizes tenure-line faculty, with new lecturer appointees considered last.

Appointees must demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States. California State University, Fresno does not sponsor Temporary Faculty for work visas.

The temporary faculty pool remains open for two academic terms. Applicants interested in remaining in the pool beyond this period must reapply. Positions are often filled just prior to the start of the academic term, and appointees may need to begin teaching on short notice.

Anticipated semesters for appointments:

  • Fall 2026: August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026
  • Spring 2027: January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027

Requirements

Education: A Master's Degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field with similar graduate-level mathematics coursework (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent).

Experience:

  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated commitment to developing a welcoming and supportive learning environment.
  • Evidence of successful teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, evidenced by prior teaching experiences, evaluations, or other documentation.
  • Experience with implementing active learning techniques in mathematics and statistics courses.
  • A solid mathematical background.
  • A Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics is required for teaching upper division mathematics or statistics courses.

Pay

Compensation is based on qualifications and experience within the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers). The salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master's degree is $5,507–$6,677 per month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are typically at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary is adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per academic term.
