About the role

The Linguistics department provides several options in the Linguistics major, including TESL/SLAT, and also handles a number of foreign language courses and general education courses, together with service courses for the Liberal Studies program.

Responsibilities

  • Teach Chinese, Hmong, Japanese, English 5A, English 5B, English 10 or Linguistics courses.
  • Teach high enrollment general education courses.
  • Adhere to and implement university and system-wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306, paragraph 2.
  • Prepare, deliver, conduct, proctor, and grade lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, and midterm and final exams.
  • Offer and meet classes as scheduled throughout the entire semester, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e. asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Requirements

  • A Master's degree in Linguistics or English or Teaching English as a Second Language or other similar field or applicable foreign language area.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.

Qualifications

  • Education: A Master's degree in one of the following: Linguistics or English or Teaching English as a Second Language or other similar field or applicable foreign language area.
  • Experience: Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Preferred Qualifications: A commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, which may be exhibited through prior teaching experiences and teaching evaluations or other evidence.

Skills

  • Ability to teach Chinese, Hmong, Japanese, English 5A, English 5B, English 10, and Linguistics courses.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to adapt to different teaching methods and technologies.

Benefits

  • Compensation commensurate by qualifications and experience within salary range placement.
  • Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range.
  • Actual monthly salary will be adjusted based on the number of weighted teaching units (WTUs) assigned per an academic term.

Pay

  • Salary ranges are established by the CSU Salary Schedule (Class Code = 2358 for Academic Year Lecturers).
  • The salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master's degree is $5,507-6,677 per a month when teaching full time (15 WTUs).

Schedule

  • Temporary faculty members are responsible for adhering to and implementing university and system-wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306, paragraph 2.
  • All classes must be offered and meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester, in the mode assigned and listed in the schedule of classes (i.e. asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).

  • Review may begin as early June 15th, 2026 for a Fall 2026 assignment.
  • The deadline is July 1st, 2026 to be fully considered for Fall 2026 hiring.
  • The projected deadline is October 31, 2026 to be fully considered for Spring 2027 hiring.
  • The projected Job Announcement for 2026-2027 Academic Year closing date is March 1, 2027.
