This internship offers valuable insight and experience into Municipal Government Human Resources.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare new hire orientation packets.
  • Assist with maintenance of employee files.
  • Assist with recruitment and benefit-related functions.
  • Provide administrative support to the Human Resources Department.
  • Audit employee files to meet compliance standards.
  • Assist with Public Safety Promotional Process development and implementation.
  • Participate and assist with special HR projects.
  • Act discretely when working with highly confidential Human Resources information.
  • Attend HR Department meetings as needed.
  • Attend job fairs and hiring events.
  • Perform other tasks/projects assigned by the Human Resources Director.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate students pursuing a degree in Human Resources or a related field.
  • Strong interest in Human Resources.
  • Coursework in Human Resources/Organizational Psychology.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and relationship-building skills.
  • Attention to detail and teamwork skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel); ADP HRIS is a plus.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks independently.
  • Must be well-organized and possess good follow-up skills.
  • Prior office experience preferred.
  • Pleasant personality with the ability to interact well with other team members.
  • Available for a minimum of twenty (20) hours a week.
  • Must provide proof of legal right to work in the United States.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Willing to work overtime and cooperate with the department’s workload.
  • Willing to attend continuing education courses and comply with City of Prattville rules and regulations.
  • Must submit to drug screenings for this safety-sensitive position.
  • Must accomplish the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations, in a timely manner.

Work Environment

  • Job duties are typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.
  • Employees frequently lift light and occasionally heavy objects and distinguish between shades of color.
  • Job duties are typically performed in an office environment.
  • Requires the ability to deal with and relate to people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Requires the ability to talk, express, or exchange ideas by means of spoken words and/or hear and perceive the nature of sounds by ear.
  • Must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress.
  • Requires regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.

  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of personnel administration principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of employee recruitment and hiring principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.

  • Skill in the maintenance of files and records.
  • Skill in problem-solving and interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in the provision of customer services.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
