About the role

The Department of Teaching Credentials prepares educators within an anti-racist framework and is committed to advancing antiracism and inclusion. We prepare future PK–3 ECE Instruction Specialists, Elementary, Secondary, and Education Specialists (formerly Special Education) teachers. As an anchor institution in the diverse Sacramento region, we prepare teachers and leaders committed to social justice, equity, and inclusion in culturally and linguistically diverse schools and communities.

We seek part-time lecturers to serve as:

  • PK–3 ECE Instruction Specialists, Multiple Subject, Single Subject and/or Education Specialists (formerly Special Education) university supervisors in area PK–12 schools, traveling to local schools to observe candidate instruction and mentor candidates; evaluating candidate progress toward meeting California Teaching Performance Expectations; and attending monthly meetings with other supervisory and instructional faculty
  • Instructional faculty in our PK–3 and Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) programs, with duties including instruction, class preparation, grading, and office hours

Course assignments, including dates, times, and modality, are made by the Department Chair under the direction of the College Dean. Part-time lecturers are instructional faculty with conditional appointments based on enrollment and budget. Initial appointments are typically for one semester, occasionally for an academic year, and may be renewed based on department needs, funding, and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Observe and mentor teacher candidates in PK–12 school placements
  • Evaluate candidate progress toward meeting California Teaching Performance Expectations
  • Attend monthly meetings with supervisory and instructional faculty
  • For instructional faculty: teach courses, prepare classes, grade student work, and hold office hours
  • Other duties as assigned based on departmental needs

Required Qualifications

  • PK–3 ECE Instruction Specialist: Master’s degree in education or related field, or Bachelor’s degree with significant relevant professional experience (7+ years) and recent PK–3rd grade professional experience (at least one assignment in the last 3 years); coursework emphasis (e.g., 24 units or more) in Early Childhood Education for either degree
  • Multiple Subject: Master’s degree in education or related field, or Bachelor’s degree with significant relevant professional experience (7+ years)
  • Single Subject: Master’s degree in education or related field, or Bachelor’s degree with significant relevant professional experience (7+ years)
  • Education Specialists (formerly Special Education): Master’s degree in education or related field, or Bachelor’s degree with significant relevant professional experience (7+ years)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Education or related field
  • For instructional faculty: prior higher education teaching experience
  • For field supervisor positions: recent experience mentoring teacher candidates or new teachers
  • California credential appropriate to the program: Multiple Subject, Single Subject, or Education Specialist (formerly Special Education)
  • PK–3 ECE Instruction Specialist: California Master Teacher Level or higher Child Development permit

Rank and Salary

Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. As of July 2024, the classification salary ranges for the respective ranks are:

  • Lecturer A: $5,507 – $6,677
  • Lecturer B: $6,221 – $13,224
  • Lecturer C: $6,825 – $14,523
  • Lecturer D: $8,593 – $15,211

The salary ranges are based on a “full-time rate” (15 weighted teaching units). A semester’s compensation consists of six payments of the given amount. Salary is pro-rated based on the units worked out of 15 WTUs. For example, a Lecturer A assigned 3 units at the minimum salary would receive $5,507 × 3/15 = $1,101.40 per check, totaling $6,608.40 for the semester.
