Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalency
• Athletic Coaching License (7-12) from the New Mexico Public Education Department (how to apply)
• Completion of the Fundamentals of Coaching online exam offered through the New Mexico Activities Association (www.nmact.org)
• Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport
• Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of basketball
• Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program

Responsibilities

• Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training
• Promote individual and team success while fostering character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment
• Stay current with new theories and procedures pertinent to coaching through clinics, observations, and consultation
• Work with students to provide practice support and guidance for team success during the sports season
• Teach and enforce rules and regulations of the sport
• Advise, coordinate, and support assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and principal
• Serve as a positive role model for student athletes through instruction and actions

Schedule

Evenings and weekends; on-site attendance is mandatory.

About the Role

This position reports to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. The head coach supervises and supports a staff of assistant coaches and middle school coaches as needed.
