Requirements

• High School Diploma or Equivalency
• Athletic Coaching License (7-12) from the New Mexico Public Education Department (how to apply)
• Completion of the Fundamentals of Coaching online exam offered through the New Mexico Activities Association (www.nmact.org)
• Ability to organize and supervise a total sports program
• Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports)

Responsibilities

• Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training to achieve individual and team success
• Demonstrate and instruct behaviors that foster socially acceptable character development, self-discipline, self-confidence, and pride of accomplishment
• Upgrade knowledge and skills through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation
• Work with students interested in sports, providing practice support and advice for team success during the season
• Teach and enforce rules and regulations of the sport
• Advise, coordinate, and support assistant coaches and middle school coaches in conjunction with the athletic director and respective principal

About the Role

The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of basketball and continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field. The coach serves as an appropriate role model for student athletes through instructions and actions.

This position reports to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals. On-site attendance is mandatory, and the role involves work on evenings and weekends.
