Youth Program/Education Assistant I
About the role
The Tarheel Challenge Academy (TCA) seeks candidates passionate about supporting 16-18-year-old at-risk youth. This is a statewide continuous posting and may reflect current vacancies. Positions are located in Salemburg, Sampson County, and New London, Stanly County.
Responsibilities
- Functions as mentors, advisors, counselors, and teachers, communicating program standards and expectations to cadets.
- Identifies and corrects factors leading to inappropriate behaviors immediately.
- Collaborates to ensure continuous and adequate supervision, accountability, control, training, safety, and well-being of cadets 24/7.
- Conducts inspections of cadets' living quarters, performs physical fitness tasks, administers basic first aid, and supervises off-site activities.
- Documents occurrences and briefs following shifts, addressing any problems or issues.
- Initiates counseling statements and incident reports as necessary to document inappropriate behavior.
- Performs physical fitness tasks (marching, running, push-ups, sit-ups, calisthenics, prolonged standing).
Requirements
- Schedules: 16 days on, 14 days off; works holidays and weekends unless the academy is closed.
- Shifts: 1st Shift 6am-7pm (1hr break); 2nd Shift 10am-11pm (1hr break); 3rd Shift 6pm-7am (1hr break).
- Cadres work 4 hours on Mondays, 13 hours on Tuesdays, and 39 hours on Wednesdays-Fridays.
- Knowledge, skills, and abilities: Experience with youth and/or adults in teaching, coaching, supervising; experience in documenting observations and report writing; experience in organizing and leading groups for training or service projects.
Qualifications
- Minimum Education and Experience: Associate’s degree in human services or related field, or high school diploma/GED plus two years of directly related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills
- CPR certification.
- Nurse Aide I or II certification by the NC Division of Health Service Regulation.

Pay
Recruitment range: $36,159.00 - $54,237.00. Salary based on qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations.
Schedule
Individuals work approximately 16 days a month and off 14 days. Shifts include 1st Shift 6am-7pm, 2nd Shift 10am-11pm, and 3rd Shift 6pm-7am. Cadres work 4 hours on Mondays, 13 hours on Tuesdays, and 39 hours on Wednesdays-Fridays.
