About the role

The Youth Mentor provides therapeutic support to at-risk youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to help them manage mental and behavioral health challenges. This position is responsible for providing a person-centered therapeutic relationship for youth or adults with I/DD who are struggling with mental, behavioral, social, and emotional impairment. The primary responsibility is to support members in learning to cope with their mental and behavioral health challenges.

In close coordination with the therapist, the Youth Mentor helps members learn and practice skills to improve their mental health symptoms and live in the community. This role requires teaching and modeling effective personal interactions and behaviors, advocating for members within various systems, sharing personal experiences, mentoring, and helping members build natural supports and community connections.

We are currently seeking a male role model to serve at-risk youth.

Responsibilities

  • Provide therapeutic support to at-risk youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Model effective personal interactions and behaviors.
  • Advocate for members within different systems they are involved in.
  • Help members build natural supports and community connections.
  • Support members in learning to cope with mental and behavioral health challenges.
  • Teach and practice skills to improve mental health symptoms in coordination with a therapist.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age.

Qualifications

  • One year or more of direct experience with children or adolescents (preferred).
  • One year or more of direct experience with the intellectual and developmental disabilities population (preferred).
  • Experience working with individuals with complex mental health needs (preferred).
