Yard Switcher

Job Summary

Operates a switcher truck to move tractor‑trailers around the distribution center yard, including backing up trailers to loading docks, performing safety checks to secure trailers, opening bay doors, and assisting dock workers with loading and unloading inventory. This position requires operation of a company or rental vehicle and may be performed during the average work week. The company will continuously monitor Motor Vehicle Records (MVRs); an acceptable MVR status and a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with hazardous‑materials endorsement are required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Current Class A or B CDL issued by the state of residence with a hazardous‑materials endorsement.
• 2+ years of commercial driving experience compliant with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSA) and DOT regulations.
• No more than 2 minor accidents in the past rolling 3 years.
• No more than 2 moving violations in the past rolling 3 years.
• Prior yard jockey experience.

Responsibilities

• Transports trailers within the distribution center, moving them between shipping and receiving docks.
• Performs equipment inspections in accordance with DOT regulations and internal procedures.
• Couples and uncouples tractor‑trailer units, including connecting and disconnecting brake lines as needed.
• Moves and organizes line‑haul trailers in the shipping yard to ensure efficient movement of inventory.
• Ensures trailers are ready for loading, unloading, and transport.
• Documents all trailer moves within the shipping yard.
• Refuels the switcher truck when needed.

Nature and Scope

Under limited supervision, the employee relies on experience and independent judgment to modify processes, resolve situations, and determine the best approach to achieve desired outcomes. Work is periodically reviewed by a supervisor or direct customers. The role may include providing guidance, training, and technical assistance to junior personnel, contributing to their professional development, but does not include hiring or firing authority.

Work Environment

The position is typically performed in a comfortable environment but includes regular exposure to temperature extremes, moving machinery, loud noises, and fumes. Intermittent periods of continuous physical exertion are required (walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting, and maneuvering materials or equipment weighing 50 + pounds). Overnight travel is required less than 10 % of the time.

Education and Experience

Technical certification or an associate degree may be required in some areas. Generally, 5–7 years of experience in a related area of responsibility is expected. This posting applies to candidates in CA, CO, CT, D.C., DE, HI, IL, MA, MD, ME, MN, NJ, NV, NY, OH, RI, VA, VT, and WA.

Pay Range

$30.25 – $34.80 hourly (individual base pay is determined based on market data, experience, skills, internal equity, and other factors).
