Workforce Development Non-Credit Adjunct Instructor - Welding

About the role

Non-Credit Adjunct Instructors provide instruction, support, assessment, and mentorship to the college’s non-credit learners. The major emphasis is on teaching, working with participants in classrooms, laboratories, clinical sites, field sites, distance learning, individual conferences, and related contexts to help learners develop their interest and abilities.

This part-time position is contracted on a course-by-course basis, as needed, and will not exceed 1,500 contracted hours per year. Contracts may include teaching contact hours, classroom preparation and closure activities, curriculum design and lesson preparation, participant advising and support, and participant assignment assessment and evaluation.

Teaching schedules may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, and distance education classes based on course schedules and instructor availability. The primary training location is the James City County Trades Center in Toano, VA; other opportunities may be available at VPCC’s Hampton campus.

Workforce development programs prioritize industry credential attainment and skill enhancement. Teaching experience is helpful but not required; professional experience and appropriate certification are critical. Students can be novices, partially trained, or experienced technicians seeking a credential. Teaching is primarily in-person, but may occasionally be hybrid if necessary.

Responsibilities

• Deliver instruction in welding techniques and processes to non-credit learners.
• Assess learner performance and progress, providing appropriate feedback.
• Plan and organize instruction to maximize documented student learning.
• Manage a class of up to 10 students, including live work, lectures, and labs on-site and off-site.
• Promote higher-order thinking and problem-solving among participants.
• Maintain complete, accurate educational records.
• Adapt to state requirements, local needs, and national trends in welding education.
• Use email (Outlook), Microsoft Word, and Excel for instructional and administrative tasks.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Extensive experience working as a welder.
• Knowledge of welding fillet welds in all positions using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW processes.
• Knowledge of groove welds with and without backing plate using SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW processes.
• Knowledge of open-root pipe welding using SMAW and GTAW processes.
• Knowledge of setup and operation of Oxyacetylene Welding and Cutting and Plasma Cutting equipment.
• Knowledge of weld joint geometry, welding terminology, basic welding drawings, and welding symbols.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated teaching and educational facilitation skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
• Good computer skills.
• Ability to apply welding theories to practical applications.
• Ability to measure, assess, and align learner outcomes within courses.
• Ability to serve the needs of traditional and non-traditional students.
• Ability to adhere to established standards for educational quality.

Preferred Qualifications

• AWS Welder Certifications in SMAW/GTAW Pipe.
• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
• Prior teaching or training experience in a workplace or community/technical college setting.

Pay

$36–$55 per hour.
