Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of workers' compensation defense matters in a fast-paced environment.
  • Analyze legal and factual issues and apply relevant law to case circumstances.
  • Review and analyze medical records and technical information for case development and litigation strategy.
  • Draft, review, and proofread legal documents, pleadings, motions, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, insurers, witnesses, opposing counsel, and other legal professionals.
  • Prepare for and conduct depositions, including depositions of opposing experts and plaintiffs.
  • Prepare clients and witnesses for depositions and other litigation proceedings.
  • Independently represent clients at mediations, as appropriate.
  • Take a significant role in trial preparation and litigation proceedings consistent with experience level.
  • Develop effective and creative strategies to address client legal issues.
  • Identify legal issues independently and seek guidance when appropriate.
  • Supervise assigned legal assistants and delegate tasks to paralegals as needed.
  • Manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintain accurate and timely time entries and billing records.
  • Participate in client development, marketing, seminars, public speaking, and legal writing opportunities.
  • Contribute to the development and strengthening of existing client relationships.
  • Participate in firm committees, bar-related activities, and other professional organizations.
  • Maintain accessibility and accountability during regular business hours and, when necessary, outside of regular business hours.

Qualifications

  • Active Alabama Bar license in good standing is required.
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Three or more years of workers' compensation experience, preferably in insurance defense.
  • Strong analytical, legal research, writing, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience handling depositions, mediations, and other litigation proceedings.
  • Ability to analyze complex medical and technical information.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with attorneys and legal support staff.
  • Professional, courteous, adaptable, and positive demeanor.
  • Strong judgment, initiative, accountability, and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and complying with professional and firm policies.
