The UNT Dallas Learning Commons offers tutorial assistance in writing and STEM to students who need supplemental academic support.
About the Role
The Work Study Student Assistant serves as an important team member in the Learning Commons. They work under the supervision of the administrative staff and serve as the first point of contact for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The role includes performing clerical work and assisting professional staff with various projects.
Responsibilities
- Keep tutoring areas clean, organized, and decorated.
- Attend and complete mandatory trainings.
- Work the assigned hours per week unless making prior arrangements with supervisor.
- Assist in preparing resources and marketing materials for the Learning Commons, including handouts, workshops, flyers, website content, social media posts, and videos.
- Assist administrative staff and professional tutors with special assignments, projects, and events.
- Assist administrative staff with inventory management and other clerical work.
- Refer students to Learning Commons resources and other academic services and departments as needed.
- Direct the daily in-and-out flow of students in the Learning Commons; check students in for tutoring and encourage them to complete a survey after their session.
- Assist students in scheduling appointments for the Learning Commons and teach them how to schedule appointments through the online scheduling website.
- Answer phone calls and respond to Learning Commons emails.
- Greet students and serve as the first point of contact for the Learning Commons.
Requirements
- Must qualify as work-study eligible.
- Must be a currently enrolled University of North Texas at Dallas student making satisfactory progress toward completion of a degree program.
Qualifications
- Excellent customer service skills, as well as effective oral and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Some knowledge of office practices and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately.
- Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural, and social backgrounds.
- Responsible, reliable, and punctual.
- Ability to learn assigned tasks readily, adhere to prescribed routines, and develop skill in operating common office equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ability to work 12-19 hours per week.
- Knowledge of (or ability to rapidly assimilate and retain) University academic policy, procedure, and practices.
- Knowledge of FERPA preferred but not required.
- Ability to work under considerable pressure, adjust to constant changes, handle multiple tasks, and work with all kinds of students.
- Strong ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of broad goals and objectives.
- Work in-person (flexibility options available upon request).

Pay
$10.00/hour
Schedule
Hours worked depend on Work-study funds. General operating hours are Monday-Friday: 9 AM - 10 PM, Saturday: 10 AM - 9 PM.
