Duties
- Selects the proper type and grade of wood/wood substitute from a few grades of soft pine, fir, plywood, and masonite.
- Selects containers, protective devices, cushioning materials, methods, and techniques needed for packing a variety of tools, parts, equipment, and other items.
- Custom packs various items that cannot be made to fit into containers of standard size.
- Applies highly detailed knowledge of cleaning, drying, and preservation of methods to material.
- Operates a variety of power tools and material handling equipment.

Qualifications
- Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled under close supervision, such as follows work orders, sketches or specifications, such as constructing small and medium boxes, crates, pallets, and other comparable items;
- Uses proper patterns and spacing for nailing, fastening, bracing, etc., some of the standard joints and grooves;
- Fits and measures;
- Receives help on more complex duties.
Physical Effort
- Wood worker uses power and manual tools while performing competitive, tiring work for long periods of time.
- Frequent standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and arm movement is required.
- Sometimes works in cramped or awkward positions.
- The work requires continuous lifting, carrying, and using tools and materials that weigh up to 60 pounds.
- Sometimes heavier weights are lifted and moved with the assistance of others or lifting devices such as floor hoists or cranes.
- May be required to operate Forklift/MHE equipment if properly trained and licensed.
Working Conditions
- Frequently exposed to sawdust, as well as other nose and lung irritations.
- Frequent exposure to loud noises from power saws, hammers, etc.
- Sometimes exposed to possible cuts from flying wooden particles, nails, fasteners, etc.
- May be required to wear protective eyeglasses, ear devices, or gloves.
Safety and Health Requirements
- Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area where assigned, as directed by the supervisor.
