Responsibilities

  • Evaluate, design, and construct containers, and package and pack highly sensitive and critical primary and secondary reactor plant components, nuclear material, and nuclear radioactive material.
  • Plan and construct specialized or custom boxes, crates, skids, and bracing structures, shipping and storage containers for items of irregular shape and unusual size and weight.
  • Create custom cutting and building supports and bracing structures.
  • Utilize blueprints, sketches, templates, and samples to layout and set up work.
  • Evaluate, design, and construct supporting cradles.
  • Assume responsibility for the technical adequacy, accuracy, and timely execution of complex material packaging.
  • Provide assistance to nuclear engineers by suggesting methods for completing difficult or unusual jobs related to container design, construction techniques, blocking and bracing methods, load securement, etc.
  • Operate all millworking machinery such as band saws, radial saws (both table and arm), and various hand and power woodworking tools.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate a wide variety of light to heavy, simple and complex woodworking machinery in the milling and fabricating functions.
  • Move heavy equipment, components, and material into position on prepared platforms using hoists, jib cranes, or by requesting assistance of rigging personnel and crane operators.
  • Ensure timely accomplishment of the assigned workload.
  • Maintain awareness of the status and progress of the work and make daily adjustments in accordance with established priorities.
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to journeyman mechanics loaned to the section during peak workloads.
  • Instruct employees in specific job techniques and provide written instructions referencing material and supplies.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
  • New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
  • You will be required to become fully radiological qualified and maintain qualifications.
  • This work requires physical exertion including recurring standing, walking, stooping, stretching, reaching, climbing, and lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • You may be exposed to prolonged bending, kneeling, crouching, and working in awkward positions.
  • You must meet the physical qualifications required for issuance of a permit to operate forklifts and/or motor vehicles and cranes, obtaining radiological qualifications.
  • You must have the ability to obtain and maintain forklift and overhead building crane operator’s license.
  • This position requires participation in the radiation health monitoring program and the ability to use radiation dosimetry for working in radiation areas.
