Wood Worker.

Responsibilities

• Plans, constructs, and repairs a variety of supply, shipping, and storage containers and similar items.
• Selects the proper type and grade of wood or wood substitute from available grades of soft pine, fir, plywood, and Masonite.
• Chooses containers, protective devices, cushioning materials, methods, and techniques needed for packing a variety of tools, parts, equipment, and other items.
• Custom packs items that cannot fit into standard-sized containers.
• Cuts and assembles wood framing, installs shock mounts, and creates cradles or cushions for fragile items such as electronic assemblies, radar housings, and gyroscopes.
• Operates a variety of power tools and material handling equipment.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Non-Sensitive security requirements; appointment subject to a favorable suitability or fitness determination.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered or exempt from Selective Service.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Material Handling Equipment (MHE) license.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license/certification to operate government vehicles.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain licenses and/or certifications required by the installation, federal, state, and local laws.
• Pre-employment physical required.
• Must comply with REAL ID requirements for accessing federal facilities.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated based on the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. While no specific length of time or experience is required, you must meet any screen-out element listed and demonstrate through experience and training that you possess the necessary knowledge and skill to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on the quality of experience rather than the length of time. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element will be eliminated from further competition.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Physical Effort

• Performs repetitive, tiring work for long periods using power and manual tools.
• Frequent standing, bending, stooping, reaching, and arm movement required.
• Works in cramped or awkward positions.
• Continuous lifting, carrying, and using tools and materials weighing up to 60 pounds; heavier weights may require assistance or lifting devices.

Working Conditions

• Work is normally performed in a shop or other enclosed areas, which may be drafty, damp, or overheated.
• Occasional outdoor work in fair or bad weather.
• Frequent exposure to sawdust and other nose/lung irritants.
• Exposure to loud noises from power saws, hammers, and other tools.
• Risk of cuts from flying wooden particles, nails, or fasteners.
• Required to wear protective equipment such as eyeglasses, ear devices, gloves, and safety clothing as directed.
• Must wear approved hearing protective devices when working near noise-hazardous areas; audiometric testing may be conducted.
